Why weren't there expressions of interest in an A-league license from Auckland before the APL made their intent to expand there clear? Because you have to know that there's an opportunity before you can look to invest in it, and nobody thought that the A-league would add another team in NZ any time soon until the APL made it clear that that was precisely what they intended to do.

What kind of investor wastes thousands, potentially millions, on a bid for a license without being reasonably certain that they're going to see a return for that investment anyway?
When was the last time that such an unsolicited long term bid (ala Bombers, Pirates, CC, CQ, Western Corridor, Brothers, etc, etc) was actually successful anyway?

Also what person who looked at the situation from an objective and economic perspective genuinely thought that NZ was a realistic chance of getting the 17th or 18th license over larger Australian markets like (e.g.) Brisbane and Perth that offered obvious commercial advantages over another NZ side?
Nobody but dreamers is the answer to that one, at least not until the current boom the sport is benefiting from in NZ made itself apparent.

Allowing the presence of bids to dictate the sport's future expansion plans is stupid on face value anyway. The NRL should have a good idea of where they want to go, why, and rough timeframe of when, then they should make it happen. Not allow the handful of loonies stupid enough to invest in an expensive bid for a sports franchise without any set timeframe for the next round of expansion, or reason to believe they have any chance of winning a license, influence decisions on the future growth of the sport.
Committed ones, hence why there are known bidders building businesses cases and speaking with the nrl in perth, png and brisbane right now. And the go anywhere Bears.

I just don’t a risk averse nrl announcing nz2 and hoping someone comes forward to back it.

They're not going to pull attention away from the Dolphins in their first year and They're not going to take attention away from the finals series..
Any expansion announcement will be post season.
I was talking about interested nz owners, not the nrl making announcements

How so?

the introduction of the dolphins helped caused a boom in qld rl

a second nz team won’t take away from the warriors unless it’s based on Auckland
Again that makes no sense, if anything you need to make sure it IS in Auckland as a 2nd side, sharing mt smart stadium, if you're trying to replicate the dolphins influence on brisbane

And i never said i didn't want an NZ2 wherever it may be located, just that your logic is flawed if you think its the same thing, if you want an NZ2,you need to promote a Hamilton based side that was or has been around since 1947, and ask for bids for Auckland 2, whilst the warriors have run dead last
This was the exact conditions for what happened with the dolphins/bronx, of course it doesn't need to be this for it to work, but you cant say this is the perfect time to open a bid for nz2, and say this is because it was the same conditions as the dolphins, as it was not

Again, i dont disagree, just that your maths and logic to say dolphins did that, in these set of circumstances, so lets plug it over into nz, for nz2..
Doesn't compute, as it was not the same, warriors are flying high, RU is at an all time boring low, if anything, strengthening the NZ RL fanbase to the warriors is further needed, not splitting it apart..
Anyways i would wait till theyve run back to the pack, before added an option 2 for the fans

Again NZ2 is the only option the commission hasn't talked up as club 18-20. Telling Id say.
I dont know why as Id have thought theyd be the obvious choice for club 19 after perth comes in.

Yeh they are taking a women’s magic. Round and the 2027 orign to Auckland’s because they don’t see the growth potential of nz2 chuckles

To me it is a bit like the AFL saying that the Swans are super popular - so we will just add another team in Sydney
It doesn't seem like there are a bunch of AFL fans in Sydney who wanted to see someone else play but the Swans

I get that NZ2 would be further away from Auckland - but I think the next way for NZ to capitalise on the current interest in the NRL would be to see if grassroots teams start growing outside of Auckland

Every game held outside of Auckland this year has had massive or sold out crowds

all stars, tigers and a game in Wellington

afl chucked in a second team with no evidence the swans were getting big crowds in western Sydney

plus nrl vs union or afl is in our favour with our product

Haha if taking NRL events to cities meant anything perth would have had a club 10 years ago!

It hasn't happened, nor is there an actual bid stemming from NZ in any location, so no! its the the fkn same thing, its actually nothing, just an idea to split the fanbase... same could be said of Penrith having another team in its council, or a Melbourne 2.0, with RU being a non existencewith the rebels, and having 5 million in population (just like NZ has)

Maybe if the crowds had been good they would have

couple of those nrl games got shocking turnouts
ten years ago? we broke the nid stadium record twice. And sold out the test match. I wouldnt expect you to know that.

Lets see,
my moneys on Perth for club 18 (WA govt backing, rich consortium building the business plan, 45k fans at nrl games), unless the feds are throwing really stupid money at PNG then they might get it, even then its such a risky scenario that I cant see the NRL going for it. NZ2 no backers, Brisbane3 too much existing club resistance.
But time will tell.

Thats the biggie. If theres no one knocking on the door are the NRL going to open it just in case someones there?
Fkn hell no they want driven businessmen, clubs that want to be there, they aren't looking to create some new car, then flog it off to an investor.. they want a car manufacturer to join the comp, thats how this works, redcliffe have been a club for over 70+ years, they are looking to hand out a peice of paper that says nrl licence and fold someone in, without having to create any infustrucure for it, the pacifika idea, is the closest thing for them to get off their arse and build something but even then they want PNG bid to run it, the NRL is basically an IGA grocery folding in clubs under their banner

Weve had from the commission:
Abdo and Vlandys talk up PNG/Pasifika
Vlandys talk up Perth
Vlandys talk up Melbourne 2 (lol)
Jones talk up Ipswich

no ones talked up NZ2 from the commission. Its clearly not on their radar, may change with Warriors success this year but still no signs they are interested in adding a second club. I am surprised but maybe it is due to no possible bidders banging on the door. Even Chalmers seems to have disappeared with no word for last 2 years.
