New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Indeed. A 10 year old watching Balmain in 1989 would be 45 and barely remember it. Super League really only impacts over 50s fans and former fans.
It’s impact only stopped being felt recently

eg news ltd half ownership of the game
No 2nd team allowed in Brisbane
News ltd paying poor money for the pay tv rights as they feel they own the sport

many people who are ignorant of super league will say nrl isn’t ambitious like afl
Re expansion

Kids don't know about any of that stuff. Neither do most of the population.

Kids today just want to follow superstar players or they support a club because they like the colors or logo.

It happens all the time in human culture. It's a form of generational amnesia. It's not unique to the NRL.
History was my speciality in school

the history of rugby league is amazing

it’s more than just a sport

plus knowing the history helps better understand the current and future situation for the sport

We’ve had 3 tv deals since news ltd stepped away from half ownership. All underpaid!

The second statement in this proposition disproves the first. Your error stems from placing too much weight on a priori reasoning over a posteriori.

NRL philosophers negotiating the next TV deal must follow empirical methods.

If Perth Rat wants to see a victorious British national RL team at a World Cup or Ashes series then he'll have to resort to scrolling through a history book.

Can understand that, we were coming off probably our lowest point in history with the covid/Nathan Brown era, we’d just lost a couple of our better performers in Walsh and Lodge, a few players chose to remain in Aus, Rookie coach coming in understandably expectations were rock bottom.
That did a complete 180 in 12 months with our performances last year I’d expect a significant jump

You guys won the Harold Matts comp. You get those locals staying in NZ as opposed to coming over here and that helps off field popularity as much as on field does

I agree but it doesn't really change the reality. As those kids get older and more into the sport, then they'll learn more about it.

It certainly does, fingers crossed we are able to develop those guys through to first graders. Holden cup days we blew a golden opportunity not being able to get more of those guys first grade ready

Holden Cup they were expected to be ready for FG. At this level they still have 2 more age group levels before being a professional.

That should help get diet and the other off field things needed to make it right. Some of the guys would be 16 and can't even play NRL until 18 anyway.

That is the age you want to get right

Gus was always complaining with under 20s to first grade there was too much of a gap

Another key factor is targeting the right kids. Talking to people who know some player agents there’s a lot of feedback around frustration of scouts only interested in the biggest kids that they feel they can mold, some of the smaller more skilled kids get overlooked too often. Given Polynesian kids tend to physically mature 2-3 years earlier there’s a lot of kids that don’t get a look in at that age

The problem is that's one team playing in an Oz comp for a short period of time. Meanwhile the same aged players of rugby in NZ are playing in tough schools comps and rep comps for the rest of the season.

Over in the Warriors NZRL part of the forum we've been discussing what those players do now that the comp is over and we're still at the beginning of the season? There's probably an ok Auckland schools comp but not much going on outside of that.

As @Matiunz and I and others like Te Kaha (before he gave up with the cicrular b/s from Wb and the multi) have been trying to explain is that league in NZ needs a lot of work at domestic level. Currently the shop window (the Warriors) looks awesome, but the domestic game isn't that great, most comps are played by a very small number of teams, in some areas (like where I'm from) it's riddled with gangs. To build on the success of the Warriors NZRL needs to build some domestic/schools comps that can feed into the likes of the Harold Matthews/Warriors or NZ2 when it happens. And it needs to happen asap as the Warriors look to be returning to type.

Kids over here play both also though. A high number actually go to Rugby schools and play both codes.
