What changed to cause the growth?

Did nzrl spending more money ?
I think it's mostly women and post Covid increases - as noted previously rugby has been the same this year. In regards to the huge Otago increase that would be due to the baseline being so low to start with.

Edit: From the looks of the Otago league Sporty page they're including a girls Kiwi tag comp (which I assume is touch) and a secondary schools 9s tournament in their figures.

Huh? That's all the Junior teams competitions (U18 boys and girls, U15 boys and girls etc) not 1 competition.

Also, you didn't say what school you and your boy went to?

This link has info about the clubs and schools league:
We certainly didn't go to any "named" school.. lol. we both went to one of the poorest schools and districts in The South Island.
And a slight correction - I wandered why you asked if I played "Soccer" on a Wednesday. That was a fat finger.. I played 1st XV Rugby on a Wednesday for my School - Prem League on a Saturday OR Sunday because some games were played on either.

So which school? Seems an odd thing to be cagey about.

Bud don’t worry about schools, mine was Hastings Boys which isn’t the most prestigious school out there lol.
In the Bay anyways I would play Hockey on Monday nights, Basketball on Wednesdays, Rugby on Sat- depending on the timing of the games you could sometimes sub in for a soccer game in the afternoon, which was all schools - no schools league comp so if you wanted to play league it was on a Sunday with the mongrel mob scene which wasn’t the most appealing.
Interesting haven’t heard of Union not on Saturdays playing Union in HB/Manawatu/Taranaki and Wellington - only exception was the super 8 school exchanges we had but that was in addition to a Sat game (likewise Hockey we had an additional game those weeks)

Sheesh bro, you were into everything, just rugby and league for me and two games of 2nd XI hockey because they were short of players, despite the fact I had no idea of the rules (as a defender I thought I could only stay behind halfway).

You must have been a few years after me at Hastings as Super 8 didn't start until a couple of years after I left. The league wasn't so gang dominated then either.
