Must be very messy and tiring for the South African teams playing one minute in Australia and New Zealand and getting blamed that no Kiwi/Aussie Super fan want's to watch their team on tv in the middle of night in South Africa.
And now the misplaced Dutch teams are playing in Europe and the homelands of Netherlands.
Yeah, fans/administrators in SA must be thinking "well, where the hell do we fit? Does anyone actually want us?"

The one of the main issues with SA involvement in SR is that NZ was kinda the ‘mutual friend’
To NZ all games against either opposition were appealing, SA and Aus don’t give a shit about the other. Usually Aus is the big rival for NZ but in Rugby it’s 100% SA.
The middle of the night games was a bit of a tough sell but only the due hardship would tend to actually get up and watch those, ‘Sunday breakfast’ replay viewing was quite common in NZ.
SA is a better fit for the SH comps and brings with it the lions shares of the money, whereas in Europe they are a small fish in their comps.
Argentina is the one that kinda doesn’t fit anywhere.

I used to follow super rugby quite closely. It was a hard gig with the SA teams due to time differences. Australian fans put beating NZ teams as the pinnacle. SA teams were second rank. But once they left the comp really did fall away. Super rugby is now eating the lower level comps alive but also failing to drive the game forward. All rather amusing to me since I gave up caring about the game at all.

terrible comparison.

brl became q cup and q cup in its own right is a great competition with great teams and systems within most teams im guessing.

how did the nz comp go? blokes here are saying it’s weaker. So outside warriors and the system in place that filters through the warriors ie nsw cup jersey flegg sg ball Harold matts which is all part of nsw competition anyways how’s the actual comp within nz (their reserve comp) going?

If it’s weaker than it used to be then the game might be going gang busters in mainstream but it’s grass roots might not necessarily be in a competitive shape. How’s their amateur or semi pro game going? The two kiwi brothers here say it’s not good, I take their word for it. what does a colombian and a bloke over here know more? can use all the internet websites you want to but sometimes unless you see things with feet on ground it paints different picture.

nrl teams attract crowds, it’s what pro sports do or should do not sure why even bring it up.
Hi all. Bare with me here. I live in ChCh - This chat thread, I think, started off as would a 2nd NRL Team be a success in NZ. I'm not 100% convinced that the "Grassroots" comps have much impact on that argument. My ex son in law played in the "bush" leagues in Newcastle for 10 yrs. Cessnock and Wyon ? That is one of the "breeding grounds for the NRL sides. And as far as I know, which maybe be miles wrong - no players have come from those comps since the Johns boys. My point is, if you looked at ALL local grassroot sides (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Greater QLD - how many NRL players get picked from them?? Most, if not all players get picked from Rep sides, school sides and NRL academies that have spotted those kids with potential early. I have a friend here in ChCh whose 14yr old son has just been "poached" by the Dogs to go into their academy. He was spotted at a school tournament. And any new NRL side will be picking established players and they will then, eventually, set up their own NSW Cup, J Flegg, HM sides, which will then, and only then, raise the local club level, in my humble opinion, and those kids with promise will be put into the academy of the new club. That's my thoughts anyway. But, having said all that ... We in NZ do need another competition above the local "clubland". The Bartercard Cup, at the start, was awesome and with the dollars, apparently being pumped into NZRL via the NRL, the NZRL should be making that a major priority. .

The problems with super rugby is when they allowed Australia to expand to five teams diluting their limited player pool so teams were useless

Also when sa wanted another side (the lions?) and nz wouldn’t allow it for fear of benefitting union too much in sa

Then sa and nz got in a pissing contest which saw the kiwis kick out some then all of the sa sides

Argentina is an obvious addition given their strength and ties previously to super rugby as is Japan

That’s around 15 or 16 teams if Japan has two. That would give five tv deals to pool to share which would get more interest from broadcasters

Failing that the kiwis just merge with the Japanese league and allow movement of kiwi players between Japan and nz which would mean the pool of all blacks increase heavily

Not quite right, SA originally had 4 sides- went to 5 then wanted more.
Problem was SA only really had a max of 2 strong sides at a time and the addition of the Spears/Kings was wanted from SA due to political pressure to place a team in a predominantly black location (Soweto I think?) to try and help with their racial quota system. The concern was around diluting the quality of the teams and to an extent to comp- SA eventually got their way and sure enough that’s exactly what happened and the team was cut again not long after.
