What makes Origin special is not pride or passion – it’s COMPETITIVENESS!

It is passion and pride that makes State of Origin competitive.

Knowing that you've got a 50/50 chance of winning is Origin's greatest asset!

If NSW (or one side anyway) were to win year in year out, Origin will lose its appeal just like Internationals have (to a certain degree). We'll start hearing players making excuses not to play, so on and so on.

A top of a table team (in any code) shows less pride and passion against a bottom placed team than it does against a fellow high placed side.

Competitveness is what its all about - dead simple.

Make Internationals more competitive and League's other (rep) jewel will shine again.

What do you think got the 1995 Queensland team over the line for a three nil white wash? PASSION and PRIDE.

And Queenslanders never gave up even though we got nailed pre-Origin days.

The way to make Internationals more competitive is for New Zealand to field their best team and the best way for the public to be interested is for their players to go head to head with Australia's best for the first time in a new arena.

No argument on this score – what a truly amazing site that would be – a full strength Kiwi outfit! Is there such a thing?

A true Kiwi would always rather play for the Kiwis than SOO.

Ruben Wiki would crawl on broken glass to play for the Kiwis. But cutie doesn't....

Having Kiwis playing SOO deletes the purpose of pride and passion involved in it. What makes SOO so good is that it is State V State and you are watching 2 huge rivals go at it head it at a very high intense game. It is huge for this reason, and if people from other countries want to come in and spoil the party, It is no longer State against State, it is a cheap version of International RL.

IMO, there should be no exceptions for some players to play SOO who are from different countries. The sooner the ARL enforce this rule, the easier it is in the long run.

Hmmmmmmm already done then!! Tony Carroll, Brad Thorn and soon to be Hunt...

The only reason this sh*t is been talking about is because NSW want SBW...and like he said, yeah i would love to play SOO, but i rather play for my country....thats what i grew up wanting to play for is the black jumper

off course I've said no! my argument is simple. if we start letting just anybody play Origin it will make a mockery of the greatest sporting spectacle this country will ever see. Plus if we make exemptions for somebody like Karmichael Hunt, a Kiwi, then RL in his country is worse off because he puts Origin before his country and international Rugby League will suffer. Even though I love the Roos it would be nice to see somebody be a serious threat to their mantle of world champions.

Origin should be what it was in the 80s...a trial for the Australian Test side. And no more of this Tri Series circa 1997 bullshit!

It wont help international rugby league, it will put nails in its coffin!

are you on drugs?? the SOO set-up atm is KILLING international RL. You've taken what are 3 potential kiwi starters in hunt, carroll and thorn.

But i guess thats okay coming from you probably afraid of you fellas loosing.

If it isn't broken don't fix it!

yes SOO isnt broken, but its breaking international rugby league by not allowing kiwis in it, so they hop the fence. but then agains thats okay coming from you, probably afraid of you kangaroos loosing.

Of course they've been dominant in their time so far! For the first decade of their existance they were basically playing with the qld origin team! Also, it's true the broncos crowds have been bigger than the lions, but nevertheless the lions support is brisbane has been massive! It's supposed to be a Rugby League strong hold! They shouldn't have anything close to the support they've been getting if qlders are really as passionate and loyal to qld rugby league as they keep trying to tell us.

So you're blaming the Bronco's (fans) for the Lion;'s success in Brisbane/

Obviously, when a team wins 3 premierships in a row, their crowds grow. Just like how your team has gone to 3 grand finals in a row, they're grown significantly.

Indeed they have already been devalued.

Under current conditions it will always be the case. I'll guess we'll just have to wait until NSW, QLD and Australia are choc full of Kiwi's before some dimwits finally see the light.

Australia is the big force in world league and they have pumped up the SOO bigger than international league to the point where players from other countries would rather play SOO than wear their colours in international league. This isn't going to change until the ARL rectifies this. So I am all for players that are not born in Aus to play in SOO and then go on to represent the country of their birth or country where they have citizenship. Or is it that Aus are so worried that they will lose their World number 1 standing in international league that they have to keep other countries down ?

Wouldn’t surprise me – self-interest is a League tradition, it’s one of the main factors why League hasn’t advanced further than what it should have.

No it has nothing to do with us losing our #1 crown, not that we will.

It has to do with State of Origin being sacred. This bullshit only came up ever since Phil Gould started getting aroused over the prospect of Sonny Bill Williams in a Blues jerseys. What a disgrace.

No Kiwis in Origin. International games will only mean something once Internationals become the next level up from Origin, where Aussies from Queensland and New South Wales take on the Kiwis.

Having Kiwis in Origin will rip the passion and pride out of it and internationals featuring players we already saw masqurading around as Queenslanders and Blues will become "been there done that!".

You people wanting to change it so Kiwis can play Origin, it is nothing more than a stop gap measure and it shits all over State of Origin.

There was something like 7 or 8 Kiwis in the Australian schoolboys last year.

Imagine the Australian side with 7 or 8 Kiwis in it.

Kiwis are gonna play in origin anyway....and turn thier back's on NZ. Thats the problem here.

We have a chicken and egg situation happening here. In order for Internationals to flourish, countries need their full compliment of players. Origin makes this task more difficult.

Will soon happen if it’s not already (Kiwis in Origin that is – e.g. K Hunt)

SOO as you know it will become a virtual Kiwi/Pacific Island fest in the not to distant future anyway, the only difference is that these players will line up for Australia rather than NZ etc, thanks to Origin’s current eligibility rules

Exactly, I couldn't have said it better myself. I wonder why kiwis would want to play origin or for Australia?

I think it should come down to where they played there first game of junior footy, whatever age they are. So when they run out for the under 6's in NSW, QLD or NZ then that is where they represent if they get the chance later in life.
