Apology to Brett Stewart


ON 10 March 2009, The Courier Mail website published a series of articles about the police investigation into allegations of sexual assault made by a 17-year-old girl against Brett Stewart.


Mr Stewart was acquitted by a jury of the resulting criminal charges in September 2010.

Nationwide News Pty Limited apologises to Mr Stewart for any hurt and embarrassment caused by those articles.

The amount of compensation they pay is a pittance compared to the amount of papers they sell from their rapist headlines. To the point where they actually budget for how much they will eventually pay. How sick is that?

This whole saga has ruined Bretts career, he no doubt will get back playing good footy, but personally I think this, and his injuries will have taken too large a toll on him. Try recovering from injuries while you got these types of allegations hanging over your head.

I hope the old 'red devil' gets back to playing some good footy this week (as much as i despise the Sea Eagles).

There should be laws in place where an independant body can be used to estimate how much money was made (how many papers we sold) as a result of baseless accusations and use that figure to compensate the wrongfully accused accordingly. Dollar for dollar

Public figures being investigated creates legitimate Public interest in the matter being reported. Only irresponsible journalism or malice resulting in defamation should lead to damages. It sounds odious but there is a balance that needs to be struck between the individual and public's demand for news. Courts could have ordered an injunctive gag order had Brett sought that in time.

The law often seems like an ass but there are always conflicts as to what the law should be.
