RL CEO Andrew Abdo has flagged potential for an expanded NRLW competition to be sold as a separate entity in the next broadcast rights cycle in the hope the women’s game can stand on its own feet financially by 2028.
Wednesday’s announcement of fast-tracked expansion to a 10-team NRLW competition next year was doubled down with Abdo “pretty confident we’re going to be announcing a further expanded competition in 2024.”
The eventual end goal is for every NRL team to boast an NRLW counterpart.
Industry sources have indicated that running an NRLW program, including feeder sides and pathways programs, can cost a club upwards of $1 million a year.
Where once the NRL charge $50,000 licence fees to participate in the NRLW, separate grants for women’s teams will be provided from next season, matching a salary cap that is yet to be locked in, but expected to all but double this year’s $350,000 figure.
One NRLW CEO indicated that overall costs would see clubs emerge with “not much change from half a million” after the NRL grant.
However, multiple rival bosses are optimistic that revenue from sponsors, corporate and government partnerships would offset those costs and see their women’s operations all but break even.

The Raiders, Wests Tigers, Sharks and Cowboys will all field maiden NRLW teams in 2023.
Negotiations around the next free-to-air and subscription television deals are likely to be broached in the next few years given both Nine, publishers of this masthead, and Foxtel are locked in as broadcasters until 2027.

While several players and coaches have expressed concerns over talent depth as the women’s game rapidly expands, Abdo is hopeful the NRLW is a significant bargaining chip in its own right in five years’ time.
“Our job is to build this competition in terms of teams and depth so that when we’re having the rights negotiations for 2028, we’re putting forward something that’s really compelling, that will be valued and bought potentially as a standalone (product) in its own right,” Abdo told the Herald.

negotiations midway through the current deal – so in two or three years we’ll be having the conversation.
“In the meantime, outside of TV deals and those cycles, we’ll work with corporates and sponsors to increase those streams and the clubs are the same.

“The more money we can bring in, the more we can invest out. Having the women’s game able to re-invest back into the athletes and into the grass roots of the game, that’s what we’re aspiring for.”

In the next deal the extra content the NRL can sell-
- An expanded WNRL comp.hopefully the women can get a full season comp by then. I think the NRL will try to broadcast as many games live and not simultaneously as the mens. Mens Saturday games at 8,6,4 and having two WNRL games at 12,2. One on Thursday at 6pm as the curtain raiser to the NRL 8pm. I think the NRL will expand to 18 teams and it’ll be Monday 8pm, so another WNRL at 6pm. Along with another two games on Sunday. So that will be Thur6pm, Sat12pm,2pm, Sun12pm,6pm, Mon6pm. WNRL does rate pretty well atm, in fact better then a lot of afl games on Foxtel/Kayo, so hopefully the can sell all games to FOX and 1 or 2 to FTA. And we should have 3 womens SOO game as well.

the 18th team-
An extra game a week to sell. It’ll be interesting to see if FTA will want another game a week, If not, FOX will pay for it. I’ve got a big feeling it’ll be on Monday Night. Wether it’s Brisbane 3, the bears or NZ2 it will sell well.

pre season-
This year we saw a lot more trial games shown and they rated good. Hopefully the NRL can capitalize on this and sell more of it. It would be great if the all stars match continues and if they can bring back the Nines. A lot of potential here.

the afl deal- if the other code goes the usual way and sign with seven/fox not much will change. But if they go with that supposed Paramount deal it could change a lot things up. Fox would be desperate to make up the viewers they would lose. This could lead to expansion into foreign areas such as Adelaide and perth. Or potentially a 2nd division league.

I think re the ninth game, if FTA stump up big it will be on Monday night. If PTV or streaming only it will likely be on Sunday 6pm, especially if Perth is club 18. If its NZ2 then the extra game will still be Sunday but the 6pm Friday game will be in NZ every week, unless Sky NZ dont like that time.

Extra content Id like to see NRL Nines locked in for Feb every year and International games locked in for end of season with funding share going to competing nations. Plus as you say NRLW slotting in somewhere. Doesn't have to be every game, maybe 3-4 games a week.

If this is anything to go by, it looks likely that they will try to fit as many WNRL games in between the mens.

Selling NRLW as a standalone comp is just a TV rights negotiation tool

It will end up being given away just like internationals and lower grade games

I am not too sure. They have to pay the players to be professional some how

Lets assume its NRL pregame as proposed

There are only two live slots, currently used by NSW Cup games

I cant see 8 live games being ever offered in the deal

If the seasons the seasons run the same. Can do Thursday night. Early Friday, Sat live, Can do a Sunday game early. Say 10 am into NSW Cup. Do a game live after the 4pm mens.

Then you do the rest on replay. It is a good mix and allows some money flowing back in

Heard on SENQ radio today AFL wants 7/10 to pay $600m/yr but Paramont won’t stump up the cash, so will be well short

This has afl looking for $600mill. Can’t see another massive % jump like that. Current deal is $416mill, nrl achieved a 6% increase. If afl could achieve $500mill that’d be around 25% increase which would put us well in the shade.

interesting comment in here that ch9 are keen on buying a Thursday night game!

This isn’t the worst news for a potential NRL club in WA. It seems FOX’s intentions is to get more subscribers from the west. It could result in them wanting a WA NRL team.

Got to give it to the afl the ability to spin a turd is magnificent

if fox get exclusive rights to games then the value to seven goes down

500 million is an easy benchmark for the nrl to beat with 18 teams

Best case scenario would be ch10 consortia getting the rights for $600mill.
NRL, presuming news ltd stooge vlandys isnt around by 2025/6, can then screw Fox to hold on to NRL rights including a big push into AFL markets to help their subscriber footprint in those areas.

Current games are worth $50mill each, what makes you think a ninth one will be worth double that? Only way NRL gets that sort of increase is if there is genuine competition for the rights in Australia and Fox are desperate because AFL has gone with Paramount.

There is zero chance AFL gets $600m a year. TV companies lose money now no chance they pay so much extra

you wouldn't think so, but paramount will know they will have to pay overs to pry it away. They may be thinking its a loss leader to get people over to their full streaming service. Even f they get $500mill its still a decent price jump and sht load more than we got.

Paramount is broke.
FTA is dying
Production costs are rising...It is an AFL puff piece with no quotes

Whatever afl gets for 18 teams the nrl can use that as benchmark as a worst case scenario

afl is going to the market with declining ratings and is getting smashed on foxtel

an 18 team nrl plus origin will generate 30 million plus extra viewers a year in Australia

including nz it will be around 40 million

obviously nz2 offers extra money from sky nz as well as foxtel and channel nine whereas Perth don’t

if they bring back Monday night football and nz2 then an extra 100 million is what I expect we would get
