Next TV deal discussion 2028 -

Phil Gould somewhere (maybe 100% footy) said that regular round NRL club games are loss makers for broadcasters and they only make money on origin and finals. So shorter round in theory may not be drastic. If the impact is more demand to watch every game (leading to higher tv viewership and subscription), it could work but untested

When he made that comment he was referring to TV deals of the past and he said he's not sure if that's the case now.

Doesn't make sense in the context of the modern game otherwise the AFL is in the same boat PLUS they don't have Origin.

I'm in favour of a 19 round season plus an additional rivalry round. Three week mid season rep window and four week (six for World cup years) end of season rep window.

However, if we stick with a longer season, there is a player burnout solution. Each player can play max 28 games a season but only 22 of them can be club games, meaning all players are available for 6 rep games a year. Coaches then have to be strategic about how to use their stars, players burnout is addressed, rep footy gets access to the stars, broadcasters get more content and the game gets more money.

As I said though, option A, shorter NRL season is my preference.

In the event that Gus is correct about club games losing money for broadcasters, then hard to split rep and finals games out as broadcasters will pay nowhere near what the ARLC would like for regular season games for the privilege of losing money.

He'd know more than most on this subject.

Take NRLW. The games are on Sat afternoon on both networks neither would make anything from it. Govt grants for showing womens sport possibly.

AFL has more exclusive games on FTA and Fox and 10000000 of ads per game. As opposed to NRL.

What FTA game outside of Thursday night do you see as making anything?

Afl does not have more exclusive games on Fox

Fox have to share most of their games with channel seven

Nrl has the most exclusive games for both nine and Fox

Gus has no idea what games on Fox makes money.

He would be talking as a FTA stooge.

Perth and Adelaide have their teams on FTA every week. So that is exclusive and hence why the ratings are a mess to compare.

Compare that to ch9 that gets every game on Fox Live

Problem here is old mate said "Gus Gould said this" and everyone has taken that as gospel.

Anyone got a link to such an extraordinary claim?

SL has brought in a player max game a season quota I believe ? Varies depending of back or forward.

Tv isnt paying $400mill to not make money!

So lets take FTA.

You have a panel of 4 or so people previewing a game.

During this time another NRL game is playing. So a good slab of their audience is listening on radio or watching the competition.

Game starts. Unless there a HIA's or something you have a handful of commercials

Halftime you can throw them in

2nd half repeats the 1st in most cases.

This program you have paid $1m for.

You think they are making that back on 200k watching their pre-show and 500k or so watching the game?

Easter, ANZAC Day, Origin etc are different but we are talking 90% of the games would be a loss

Stooge is right, remember how quick he was to shill for channel 9 during covid when they were trying to bend the game over to gain a reduction in the rights fee? Showed where his true loyalty's lie.

The exact ones they have now.

Thu, Fri and the lead in to the news Sunday.

Can you explain why you think this not to be case?

Well you don't think that a RL fan will be watching or listening to the 6pm Friday game? Or the 2pm Sunday game?
Hell in some cases there is a game before and after the 4pm Sunday game.

I will give you the Thursday games would be a decent money earner

Nine only have themselves to blame for loss leaders during the rounds. They pick the same 5 teams every week to play. Neutrals & less hardcore fans get sick of seeing the same teams each Thurs/Fri & Sunday
