It would make sense for them to do so. Though $30mill isnt going to make much difference to the overall size of the bid you'd think they need to make to prise the game away from News ltd. (probably 5-6% difference).

Can you imagine how much News ltd would sht on the game and pump up AFL's tyres if they lost the rights??
It would never happen

But if it did it would be the end for foxtel

They didn’t fight a super league war over the afl tv rights

It would automatically make Stan a major player and one which they can build their network on

Having all games on one platform is seamless and I’m sure has other advantages

I don’t know how RA convinces anyone to pay that much money let alone more. Even Bledisloe games ratings are absolutely f**king pathetic. If you’re not getting the World Cup you’re getting some badly rating Wallabies games and super rugby matches that rate about as well as test patterns.

I guess these companies need to have a certain amount of content but I can’t see how they’d be keen to pay too much. Doesn’t help that rugby on this country is rapidly going backwards in terms of so crowds, ratings and even number of teams. How confident are the TV networks that super rugby will even be able to commit to all their teams surviving considering their massive debt and their Melbourne team being culled?

Their tv deal is poor

Like 30 million pa for super rugby and tests including bledisloe

Not sure how high it was before but maybe 50 to 80 million so a huge drop

It was explained by STAN when they originally got the rights that the Rugby audience tend to be high income earners, therefore they are happy to pay the $25 for Stan Sport and they set and forget, paying the $25 forever more. Thier advertisers are also higher spenders, Rolex, Lexus …etc

Its in Stan’s best interest to make sure Super Rugby is as strong as possible, if that means throwing them an extra 10m to resign their top players and keep them in Australia then Stan will do it.

It will be interesting to see if Fox are interested to regain the rights, it’ll come down to how many subscribers they lost when they lost the rights and if they thinks it worth trying to get them back.

They can`t find a buyer.

"The other big asset, and perhaps the most valuable one for any potential buyer, is the suite of sports broadcast and streaming rights, which News Corp Chief executive Robert Thomson last week described as the “cornerstone to Foxtel’s success”.

"But looming negotiations for the next NRL rights deal, as rugby league is the biggest sport in both NSW and Queensland, leave the overall value on a knife edge."

"The NRL is currently chasing a significant bump up on its current deal and NRL rights could be an important consideration when it comes to Foxtel sale.

"A new owner at the helm raises the risk of Foxtel either overpaying or losing the NRL rights completely."

Seems to me the NRL have Foxtel over a barrel this time.

24 million digital huh

We need to include that now in the tv figure since the fumblers are doing the same thing
if talking media revenue sure along with radio, if talking tv value no, same way as telstra isn’t tv value for afl. Problem is everything on both sides is now hidden, afl in media, nrl hiding it in licensing with other revenue areas.

basically we have
tv vlaue
but reporting of
afl media - tv, digital and radio
and randomly in nrl ‘licensing’ - tv, radio, gambling, digital and merch.

Except ch9 is shthouse and could be very detrimental to the game given their very poor presentation of it.

In regards to Rugby's Australia's current negotiations, With so much uncertainty surrounding union at the moment Stan should consider doing a 1 year deal and wait and see what happens.

It's possible Super Rugby will be missing all its best players if this new rugby comp starts

And if the Rebels win their case, they might be back in the competition

At the moment Stan/9 have no idea what they are buying.

The value of foxtel without the nrl is zero lol

Cmon Stan make it rain. Sending foxtel broke would be sweet karma for super league

Nrl tv rights negotiations were supposed to start soon (delayed cause Perth side got delayed l)

They could be saving their money to see if they get all the nrl which would mean cutting off their union coverage cause they need the money to pay for nrl

That "new comp" seems like a bit of bullshit to be honest.

You would have to be high as f**k to create a new Union comp in this environment.

It’s just a negotiating tactic by the arabs to get the club champions league thing there as hosts

They offered decent coin too think like each union country would get tens of millions from it

Just my opinion.

I agree with the previous poster anybody setting up a new union competition would be an idiot

Between 600 million pounds in private equity, unpaid covid loans and the aru loan the sport is a basket case

Either way, Stan/9 don't want to be paying for a competition only for it to lose the 50 best players.

At this stage, Stan would be taking a huge risk having a deal longer than 1 season. If they are going to do a long deal they need a clause to let them renegotiate a new deal if Super Rugby does lose its top players.
