Either way, Stan/9 don't want to be paying for a competition only for it to lose the 50 best players.

At this stage, Stan would be taking a huge risk having a deal longer than 1 season. If they are going to do a long deal they need a clause to let them renegotiate a new deal if Super Rugby does lose its top players.

If Stan get the league they won’t need union

Won’t have any good timeslots either for games since league has them

So Stan will do a deal to broadcast Super Rugby until the end of 2027, if Stan win the NRL starting in 2028 Super Rugby will likely have to find a new broadcaster for 2028 onwards ?

If they don’t do a deal soon (exclusive period runs out late December) then I don’t think they care if they keep it or not

Foxpsorts would probably take it but for less than 30 million

For Stan to outbid foxsports for the nrl they are need to going to pay a lot which I can’t see them doing

Fox will be more desperate. Nine already has league content and at a very cheap price compared to what the pay tv rights will cost

Nine currently get 2 games a week plus exclusive gf and origins for 115 million a year

Fox pay 250 million pa for the rest

Ironically it could end up being a bit like our FTA deal, most of it will be for internationals, just like most of ours is for finals and SOO, but they`ll get even more of a pittance for the super rugby comp. A-League is in the same boat.
I do fear that Foxtel might try and grab the rights to union again though, they sure are giving it a lot of coverage in the sports section of The Australian these days, that make me nervous,no bidding wars thanks, I want those union bastards being held over a barrel by one broadcaster. I`m not sure what their coverage is like in their tabloids though.

Is contemplating scrapping reserve grade and make the KOE Cup the 2nd tier comp with two or three feature games per week got any merit.
It would be an national comp including Brisbane teams.
NRL reserves would still come from the second tier "feeder" clubs announced on Tuesday.
I know this sounds stupid but to expand the game this would be great.
Teams like Ipswich and Burleigh Heads, NSW South Coast teams and of course any state that can field an NRL STD comp.
NSWTV kicked of their televised games this year of Harold Matt's right up to flegg and I loved it. Qld did nuppin.
It would even be better having more NRL players sprinkled across all teams.
As far as relegation delegation goes I reckon it should 2 teams that go up and down.
Should I have another nap?

Fox will only want the Union rights if they had subscribers leave when they lost the rights to Stan and want those subscribers back.

Netflix are showing NFL games during the Xmas period, they have also have WWE as well, maybe the rugby league should do a deal with NETFLIX.

They have 6.2 million Australian subscribers with prob a fair cross over with NRL fans already. Doubt it would be worth it to them. The NRL would need to handle production as well which would have to be factored into the deal.

Amazon though are at 4.8 million and the NRL rights could edge them closer to Netflix. They've shown they are willing to go after home country rights of popular sports before. Obviously the ability to sell there other services direct to NRL fans is an added plus for them as well.

Production costs are the key. WWE produce their own stuff.

I am curious if Netflix run their own commentary team or just take the feed from NFL.com

Good point about Netflix.

Im interested how the economics of the Paul v Tyson fight worked ?

The fighters got paid a combined 80m, which means Netflix would have needed 4m new subscribers to make that money back…..

Id suggest they were testing the water to see if hosting big sports events drove up and held subscriptions. Probably worth it for world wide sports but less so for niche sports (in the global sense)

I don’t know whether any one has posted the following article:

Bloody olympics, not only do they cost the host nation millions in losses but the broadcasters worldwide too.

Although what the artlicle fails to mention is the ‘halo effect’. Off the back of the olympics 9 rated higher across the board. For example the Block had its best rating season for decades.

Another non league journo talking down the nrl rights

They are paying 100 million each for the Olympics and Australia open, events which run for a short period of time

Nrl at 115 million in comparison is a bargain. Taking out origin they are paying 60 million for the nrl Including the grand final

Wonder if that means they aren’t bidding for the union at all or at a reduced level
