Yeh the 20k people who watch epl games is going to make a huge difference

Nrl is the only content that matters if you want to be the top network in terms of pay / streaming
Optus streaming has over 1mill+ subscribers, mostly for soccer. The big EPL games can get over 250k views. The UEFA cup final was one of the most streamed sports games in Australia. Optus is paying around $80mill a year for EPL rights.

Yeh there’s hundreds of thousands staying up till 3 am to watch Brentford v Ipswich

The article says Optus were losing money on the contract even after they put prices up 40 percent

Nrl or bust. That’s all that’s going to matter for Stan. Union and pl soccer are filler

That article shows why Streaming alone doesn't bring in the cash. Kayo works because the Foxtel set top box customers offsets Kayo

what other sport does Optus sport have that those 1million people are subscribing for?

The losses on the soccer contracts (if there are any) are offset by the drive of soccer fans to Optus mobile plans to get the subscription at 25% full cost. Not dissimilar to what Telstra used to do with AFL and NRL.

Nrl or bust baby

If premier league soccer meant anything Optus wouldn’t be selling the business it’s a lemon

The future of which platform wins the streaming / pay tv battle in Australia will be determined by who gets the nrl rights

and yet after holding the rights for many years they then went and bought them again, for even more lol. Its like you know something they don't.

If you dont think Stan holding NRL and all of the world soccer rights puts them in a strong position to challenge Kayo and DAZN I cant help you.

What nonsense, Kayo remains viable, all be it less profitable, with AFL,F1, Supercars, NFL and the plethora of other sports they have, especially as it will continue to form part of the bigger picture of Fox services.

But we don't yet know who will bid and who will win. Scenarios stays as it has always been, multiple bidders = big pay day for NRL. One bidder equals another shafting.

Optus has the rights for premier league soccer and they are irrelevant to being a big streaming service

The fact Dazn and Stan both have shown they want more minor content only shows how important the nrl rights will be

To the victor go the spoils

They have over 1 million subscribers paying between $7-$25 a month, just for one sport. You'd be cuckoo to think that wasnt a significant revenue stream.

So 1 million for 1 sport on Optus. Kayo only has 1.5million for NRL, AFL, motorsport, etc etc.

I million subscribers is not really the number of subscribers. NOW.

"Yes, you can create a free Optus Sport account and access some free content. However, you need a paid subscription to access all content." Which is now $9.99 or a $10 tenna
So if they had 1 million paying subscribers by $10 by 12 months equals = $120m pa less costs/contract of $80m equals $40m gross profit. Why are they selling again. Also It had to be Nine entertainment rags Financial Review that comes up with rumor, no table-take their. After saying that, it would be losing money- a sale is not out of the equation- Nine could if thye have the balls snap it up for $80m--but but but- it's not showing a return Optus would have to take a loss to on sell it for a discount because the threat of contract fulfillment has to be made. You watch the only way Nine will make a play is it's given to them at under $40m pa... Or by the way who else could buy it ( who were wildly outbid by Optus ) that's right Foxtel, who would only pay sub $40m's, so they bailed. Now if their was a DANZ around who specialize in soccer they might take it off Optus. So Foxtel might buy it back at the right price....

Per the article

Optus Sport has exclusive streaming rights to the Premier League, which AFR estimated to be worth A$100 million ($62.2 million) per year, and the FA Cup, another English football tournament, until 2028.

Optus's revenue from subscription-based TV services in fiscal 2023-24 was A$75 million, which was less than 1% of its total operating revenue.
And that includes their subhub revenue.

2019 - 700,000 subscribers
2020 - 868,000 subscribers
2021 - 1 million+ subscribers

“Subscribers now are paying and you pay $24.99 monthly if you don’t have a service from Optus,” detailed Dickens. “There is a 74% discount down to $6.99 if they are an Optus home or mobile customer. That means that all of the account holders are now paying. In the first five years, it was nearly all free.
