Gordon doesn’t just benefit if nine gets the nrl rights as a shareholder

He also owns win tv

Just the fact he’s buying nine shares shows he’s bullish on the networks prospects or might even want to take it over

Both Fox and nine have deep pockets now for rugby league despite what a few people were saying here about them not being in a strong position financially
Bro, do you read?

He is selling off his NSW WIN TV licence.

And that deal allows him to buy a bigger stake in 9. He hasn't actually done that yet though.

None of what is posted above suggests that 9 are going to bid more for RL.

Could they offer to buy the rights off them? I would assume that's a big wad of cash, without the liability of the rest of the operation.

The have World Cup qualifies and stuff too, If you are after sports with a high reach then getting all of Optus is better

Yeah and Andrew Lancaster St. George`s RLFC `s Chairman and Gordon`s man on the Nine board is being tipped as the next CEO of Nine.
Amanda Laing is handling the nrl tv negotiations

Ex arlc commissioner

But yeh with Gordon owning shares and Laing doing the bidding they won’t be making a huge play for all of the nrl rights

That’s what I love about this forum is how people can be just about 100 percent wrong every time

“In a wide ranging interview on the monday night footy show on channel 9 Vlandys and “Adbo made two things very clear about the PNG expansion strategy

1. It is based around the players having tax free status in order to allow them to earn mega millions over the period of a contract and essentially set them up for life.

2. The underlying economics is based on large numbers of the 18 million population buying TV subscriptions meaning that the future TV contracts will be much bigger.”

@perthred got this from an English forum

Remind me who was the person who said the future nrl png deal would be worth squat ?

The bloke half owns St. George, his man Lancaster (St. George Illawarra Club chairman) is on the board of Nine, the talk is he is only interested in the FTA and streaming side of Nine, you will only make that work if you have a Tier One sport, otherwise you end up like Channel 10.
Now how much he pays will depend upon the competition, hard to believe DAZN will let their half go, and Paramount 10 are pretty desperate themselves.

Yet AFL took less with 7 and Fox?

So that doesn't add up
We don`t know the details of Nine`s bid, but why would the fumbles risk it given the amount of effort Seven puts in, I wish bloody Nine would do the same for us, but why would they risk Nine putting the fumbles on the secondary channels in the non-fumble states etc. etc.

It does show however Nine does have money and the importance of Tier One sports, christ they wanted both of them.

If it goes ahead as expected he will own 25% of Nine`s shares, that is usually plenty enough to control the board.
Nine has 7 directors of which 1 represents WIN. If they move to 25% ownership they are looking at getting a second seat on the board as per media talk. WIN will obviously have a big say at Nine, but control, well that is up for discussion.

We don't know Telstra's share but lets assume it still would apply with other TV.

Add that $60m to the $600m and they are mean't to of taken 30% less?

Seems unlikely

A big whack like that often means control, you`ve only got a couple of other large shareholders on side to have a majority, equally a lot of the smaller shareholders will fall in behind the majority shareholder.

Agree. Also depends how strong the other board members are and how active the other large shareholders are. While it can be seen as a positive that the NRL will be negotiating with a friendly party, the negotiators at Nine will still have to answer to the rest of the board and shareholders and can't be just seen as throwing money at the NRL, even though the rights are very important for ratings at Nine and losing them will likely have a large impact on the company.
