For example the people of Townsville, Hobart, Perth or Penrith would be invited to vote on a special levy over and above their taxes.

Virtually every sports stadium in the US is funded by this model.

Very few are privately funded or owned.

I like the idea.

Penrith was council owned. Now won't be so in most cases the land is gifted anyway. So not sure an extra tax for those councils is needed

That’s why places like Oakland don’t have a baseball or nfl team because they lose their teams to cities that can afford to fund a new stadium

Under your model the cowboys would’ve never gotten a new stadium funded given the size of the economy

Nor would Tasmania

Cities can afford to fund them, the citizens vote to or to not fund them though.

Thats democracy in action then.

It’s free market capitalism

Which means small markets miss out on a team to big places or they have to really pay through the nose
Even big markets in the US sometimes vote against these things.

And you its more financing costs that are being passed on, not the entire cost of the project.

It's a good idea, and even the concept of a local vote/ poll should be considered

I see in the Telegraph today that the NRL is looking to break $2B with the next deal …

good result?

Depends on the length but it doesn't seem much of an increase but that is to be expected for all the reasons listed in this thread.

For me. Adding PNG is better for the game but brings nothing for the Australian providers.

Seems we aren't getting the 10th game a round

Not bringing in Qtrs and being able to reduce the season are positives despite losing money is good for the game.

The shortfall hopefully comes with better internationals ( assuming PNG get to NZ, Tonga standard)

Five year deal the minimum should be 2.5 billion and that’s a poor result

Anything over 3 billion then it’s a good result

With Stan and Foxtel battling out and potentially seven or nine competing for origin then there will be loads of competitive tension

A $2.5billion 5 year cash deal will be an outstanding result for a sport that has traditionally massively underperformed in Tv negotiation deals.

Yeah but less rounds means a per game is higher
Im not convinced that will happen this deal now the NRL has pulled back from a 20 team comp in the foreseeable future. If only goes to 18 teams it will just be same rounds 1 extra game per week. If 19 then byes will stay I guess as is?

But after last week's annual general meeting, Australian Rugby League Commission chair Peter V'landys confirmed the 20th team was on ice, saying the WA state election in March would impact whether a 19th was even feasible.

A 20th franchise was seen as a way for the NRL to expand its fan base, likely in either Queensland or New Zealand, and entice broadcasters by upping its output to 10 games a week.
But Fox Sports, the league's pay TV broadcaster, is content with the nine matches that will be on offer each weekend when the league reaches 18 teams in 2028 at the latest.

"More games doesn't necessarily mean it's more valuable," Foxtel chief executive Patrick Delany told AAP.

That was my response to the question was depends on the makeup. Even 22 rounds is a big drop especially if that means only 1 Bris v Melbourne. Cowboys etc that rates well.

PNG v GC for example will rate no where near as well. Throw in no NRL on Origin weeks

So the makeup is key to what is a good figure

When we get to 20 or 22 clubs would be the time to look at it. This deal will all be about massive $'s so NRL will be very cautious re any significant structure change imo.

If the Int game keeps growing and the NRL comes up with more 'event' type successes this tv deal then 2033 may see something more radical with 20 clubs. If they do get more involved with SL its possible we could see NRL rounds replaced with Int club rounds, but that depends on how competitive the SL clubs could be.

A possible 3 conference NRL/SL comp would not be out of the question in the long term future. Especially if they can get the direct flying time down a bit.

“It comes as the NRL prepares to head to market to sell the broadcast rights from 2028, with the majority of clubs setting the NRL a target of $2.4 - $2.8 billion for five years - a significant uplift in the current deal worth around $2 billion over the same timeframe.”

Also says they want 19 rounds loll

Does that not have considerable value though ? I remember the AFL media flogging themselves silly when they got to 18 teams including perennial basket cases GWS and Good Coast..,

I would think having say an extra Sunday night 6pm game a week trumps a longer season

Yes an extra game a round certainly adds value. Though AFL's windfall was due to 3 bidders, not amount of content.
