Id be concerned if I was either. They have just shown they are happy to quickly walk away from a contract if they dont think its delivering for them.
Nrl have stan

If Dazn cuts the afl deal they have nobody (paramount won’t bid unless they have the fta rights)

Nrl has massive pay tv ratings never has to worry about delivering

Geez, the NRL really has to go the open market for the next tv rights. DAZN doesn’t sound promising. Ligue 1 is one of the top five leagues in Europe. They have a team in PSG who is one step away to reaching champions league final And yet there is problems with DAZN and Ligue 1.

DAZN ending a deal with Ligue 1- three years early.

All of a sudden, NRL going to Nine/Stan is a real possibility.

Couple of things. Obviously Ligue 1 made promises about subscriber numbers that they haven`t been able to meet and then there is the problem of piracy stealing potential subscribers that hasn`t been addressed.
I do wonder whether the deal between Ligue 1 and DAZN was signed in that period where DAZN were throwing money at everyone to gain content, subsequent massive losses are forcing them to be more realistic.
Where that leaves the NRL is anyone`s guess but I do suspect that V`landys led NRL`s recent focus on internationalising the game is a recognition that big streamers like DAZN are only going to pay big dollars for sports that have international audiences. Whether DAZN are prepared to buy in on this largely unfulfilled agenda remains to be seen.
One last thing, PVL has repeatedly said that this will be a record-breaking deal and floated numbers like $3b, he has pretty much so far proved himself to be a man of his word, so he must be confident of getting a number very similar to this.

Hopefully the NRL gets its 3bn and more. People on here talk about the game being international. While it is played in several countries, NZ, PNG and several Pacific ocean nations are hardly target markets with affluent viewers that Dazn or any other global streamer is going to open its wallet for. Yes the game is also played in the UK and France but niche as soccer dwarfs it. Same with the USA where NFL, NBA, baseball etc. are huge and league is less than an afterthought. Might even be worth giving the international rights for free or minimal $ as a sweetener to a service provider just to get some eyeballs on the game and see where it leads.

DAZN just paid $3 billion to buy Foxtel though … which is dominated by two local sports … you think they would be motivated to keep both those sports as I don’t think the international leagues you mention are major subscription drivers ( yet) …

On the reverse of that though it is chump change (sports rights speaking) to buy RL rights in those countries. You could buy NZ, UK, France and PNG RL rights for less than $120mill a year. If it drives enough subscribers to make a profit on that I guess is the big question.

Yeah I could see 7 buying MNF + Origin
9 getting everything else
DAZN/Foxtel will get subscription rights

Some competition here between 9/Stan, 7 and Dazn will be very good, but I'm most hoping for some innovation in the broadcast quality if there's two FTA providers.

Unless the NRL takes on all game day production, there won't be a split. Channels aren't going to take on that cost for 1 game a week. And the Netflix suggestion is 0% chance of happening without it.
