Including digital media and marvel ground improvements as part of a tv deal is just dishonest

This thread is about tv deals

Im pretty sure Im free to talk about the AFls media rights deal inclusive of all its parts, not just the ones you like. We dont strrip the radio and print rights from the Nine portion of the NRL deal do we?

Not relevant to this thread

Tv equals Fox plus seven

We know what those figures are

Nrl clubs make revenues from their websites separately you need to include those figures to get a true figure … which you don’t

Fits the pattern

NRL bosses Peter V’landys and Andrew Abdo met with the world’s most powerful sporting administrator – NFL boss Roger Goodell – in the US last week to secure support for next year’s Las Vegas season-opener.

Goodell is so highly regarded that he earns $70 million a year to run the NFL — the code that fills the overwhelming majority of the top 100 shows on US television every year.

V’landys revealed after the meeting in New York that Goodell has agreed to assist with rugby league’s season-opening extravaganza in Las Vegas in a massive boost for rugby league.

In return the NRL will help with the NFL’s promotion for the code’s first ever regular season game in Australia next year in Melbourne between the Los Angeles Rams and a yet to be determined rival.

“Expanding to Australia underlines our ambitions to become a global sport and accelerate international growth,” Goodell recently said.

Australia is a significant global market for the NFL with a growing fan base of 6.6 million across the country.

V’landys says having a relationship with Goodell is huge for rugby league.

“We spoke about a lot,” V’landys said.

“We basically made a decision to support each other in what we’re trying to achieve in both countries.

“We’ll back what they’re doing in Australia and they’ll back us in Las Vegas from a promotional sense.

“It is a really important relationship that we’ve been able to establish."

The meeting lasted more than an hour at NFL headquarters.

They discussed TV rights for global sport and how the NFL shares its broadcast deal with three major networks – CBS, NBC, Fox, and ESPN/ABC.

Their deal is worth $110 billion over 10 years.

“I found Roger a fantastic guy,” V’landys said.

“Really down to earth, really intelligent.

“We had an hour (chatting) with him. He even invited us back for the Superbowl.

“He doesn’t know rugby league well but is aware of what we’re trying to achieve in Vegas each year.”

Goodell will be in Australia mid next year as part of a promotional tour for the NFL game in Melbourne.

“We’re going to catch up when he’s next here,” V’landys said.

“We’ll take him to a game, most likely State of Origin.”

V’landys and Abdo also met with TV executives from the major global streaming services including DAZN owner Len Blavatnik — worth $41 billion, and News Corp global chiefs Lachlan Murdoch and Robert Thompson.

Once again PVL & Abdo thinking & doing outside the square.

Included 80 million Telstra each year

Some of that for running afl websites ….

But some also includes Telstra “spending” on the afl owned marvel stadium

Nrl doesn’t include digital media when it mentions the tv deal

Afl tv deal is around 580 or 590 million tops
You do not know how much Telstra are paying. When it was announced it was all "oh its all contra and stadium wifi". Now its $80mill lol.

NRL includes radio components in its media deal announcements. Is it being dishonest as well?

The deal needs to be compared in the cash component. Th rest is just padding.
AFL got $571mill avg a year cash. Id say $550mill cash is the NRL's bar, above and its a success, below and its a fail.

Radio isn’t media now lmao

Anyway, I’m talking about the next tv deal

So when I say it will beat afl im talking about what fox / stan, nine / seven and sky nz / dazn pay in total

It will smash the afl number

Excluding radio and Telstra

Here’s the link again

“This is the first year of the blockbuster $4.5 billion contract signed by the AFL, Foxtel and Seven in 2022. The contract will run until 2031; Foxtel pays about $418 million a year to the AFL as part of the deal.”

I know it doesn’t suit your pro afl agenda but the smh reported fox paying afl 418 million. Seven is around 170 million

Afl has no other tv revenue

So its basic maths

Even though they tried to hide the real figure it was going to come out eventually

The AFL owns the ground…its money they don’t have to “ spend” themselves…why wouldn’t be counted? Gotta feeling the NRL will be counting every $ this time

Agree, who cares if it is counted as part of broadcast rights or not. It's money that would have come out of the AFL's pocket but instead someone else is paying for it.

It's like saying the NRL should not count the money they get from the autorities when calculating if Vegas is profitable or not or when clubs get paid to play games away from their home grounds.

I’d say they’re doing all their preliminary meetings now with the various companies and will be preparing to launch a formal RFP shortly. They’ll then give parties 6-8 weeks to put forward a proposal. And then begin negotiating. I’d say we won’t have a result until maybe November/December.

always funny seeing people in this thread (same supposed experts on expansion mind you who was always wrong) arguing and bickering about things here that have 0 relevance to them and clearly they dont really know whats going on.

the way they expresses themselves its almost like they dont actually give a hoot about rugby league and jump on all the negative shit with i told ya so's. grow up ya dogs.

lets just hope this next deal is good for the game overall, all the game and not just nrl.

If PVL does a record broadcast deal and gets any sort of traction with the NRL brand in America. He needs to be an immortal. If there was ever a case for a non player to get the honour it's him for what he's done for the game.
The record deal is very much in play but anything to do with the US is a straight up pipe dream.

I'd like to see a national league, that'd be a good start for me. Something serious though with NRL support, doesn't have to be an overnight success, just something stable and we stick with it and build the game. That would be a short term success in my eyes.

It would be amazing to have a vision of a 3 conference setup for nrl.

- NRL Pacific conference - 20 teams (mature)
- NRL Europe conference - 12 teams (expanding)
- NRL Americas conference - 10 teams (emerging semi professional)

Partner the most successful and rich clubs from the 2 more mature conferences supporting americas clubs with resources, expertise, marketing etc. The goal should be to turn the americas comp into a fully fledged professional league.

Slowly expand the Europe conference with teams from France, wales, italy, Serbia etc

eventually have a Super Bowl type series with the top clubs from each conference.

the way to fund this would be to execute the first two conferences and a media deal that covers both plus a planned international calendar.

Nrl should focus on the pacific islands and nz and totally dominate union

If they can manage that then look to super league and America

And they still need to solidify Australia via wa and Adelaide expansions

Afl still generates more money than we do and nz is ripe for the taking

Yes the way I’d see it is to set up horizon goals:

2025- 2030
- focus being on establishing nrl pacific (already underway)
- start to lay foundations for nrl Europe and Americas (already underway)
- establish a strong media deal for nrl pacific

2030-2035
- shift focus to nrl Europe. Grow teams, revenue, events
- begin nrl Americas competition as amateurs / semi professional
- establish a media deal that covers nrl pacific and nrl Europe

2035-2040
- shift focus to nrl Americas
- accelerate growth in us market via partners and sponsors
- establish a major media deal that covers all 3 conferences
