Delay isn’t good

Was supposed to be done by now
Everything suggests he is confident of getting a big number and that`s all I care about.
Might be taking longer than expected if they are playing parties off each other and determining who gets what, for record amounts that will be complicated.

No one could ever accuse him of lacking confidence …

I hope he gets the $600m a year …they deserve it with how they have been underpaid over the past 20 plus years ….

Hope there are some competitive tensions from new players behind the scenes driving up the bidding…it’s obviously possible, but no media leaks about it is unusual ..

there have been less NRL games on FTA over the years meaning NRL have had more of their games exclusively on Pay TV

Also …whilst AFL games are longer and show more ads, no one is watching those ads on Pay TV if they are not subscribing to begin with … NRL is a bigger driver for subscription TV than AFL over the decades … News Ltd chose Rugby League to fight a war for control over when Pay TV started here

Also …what was your prediction for the new deal - 10 to 15 percent increase ?

Games that are Ad free during play though? AFL with Quarters.

Only Pay TV knows what the breakdown is for the subscription based. They aren't going to throw money away, So there must be some value in it.

TV doesn't not setting the schedule will limit FTA raise. On the flipside expanded NRLW should add value.

It is $115m now. $160m should be achieved there - assuming that they stay at 3 games and get their exclusive games they are after.

PayTV side is where it comes tricky. Extra game but if they lose the FTA game and PNG market itself brings no subscriptions in for the local networks. NZ doesn't have competition now for their rights too but $400m on that

I am in the camp of I believe the NRL figures reported was cash.

So this deal started at $409m.
This deal $560m
Add in International series being sold.

Of course contra still added to that

It beats the cash part of AFL. That is with AFL including Telstra in that.

Expansion achieved bringing in new revenue streams, going early has paid off if it plays out like that

Today’s NRL tv program schedule is how Saturday will look once 20 teams/10 games are set.

4 games on Saturday.

3 games on Sunday with the 6pm game.

Interested to see how the 2pm Saturday game rates.

After the year they had last year with the grand final and finals beating the afl it should be a slam dunk

His comments about not making it unaffordable for fans are stupid too

We are already paying more on kayo and Fox for the afl tv deal and it’s only going to go up if they retain the league

BROADCAST BONANZA
V’landys revealed the code’s next TV rights deal - due to begin from 2028 - will be finalised before this year’s grand final.
Streaming giants Netflix and DAZN, the latter of which completed a $3.4 billion buyout of Foxtel last April, have been touted as keen bidders, alongside current free-to-air rights holders Channel 9.
Media industry experts believe the NRL could fetch between $3 billion to $5 billion for a five-year term.
Negotiations are accelerating, with V’landys giving the strongest indication yet the code’s next broadcast deal is imminent.
“It will be done in the next six months, yes,” he said.
“It will be finished.
“We have given ourselves a time frame and we will meet that deadline.
“It’s a huge opportunity for us and yes, absolutely it will be done this year.

V’landys says the NRL’s next broadcast deal is coming soon. Picture: Rohan Kelly
“We have started talks, we have spoken to a number of parties, we’re out of the blocks.
“There is great interest in our sport, naturally because we had the highest TV rating audience last year. We have four of the top five most-watched programs.
“So why wouldn’t anyone want us?”
While V’landys is confident the deal will silence critics who have accused the NRL of underselling their current TV rights contract, he is mindful not to rip-off rugby league fans.
“It will be a record deal, absolutely,” he said.
“But we have to look at ways to make sure the fans don’t suffer. Naturally, whatever the broadcasters pay, they try to recoup, so we have to make sure the fans aren’t affected.
“All options are on the table and we have made that clear.
“We will do what’s best for rugby league, but we also have to make sure that we look after our game and the last thing we want to do is make it too expensive for the fans.
“At the end of it, whatever rights fees you get, the consumer pays for it, so you have to be careful you don’t alienate your fans by doing a record deal.
“In the back of our heads, yes, we have to maximise the amount of money we get, but at the same time we have to put protections in place so our fans aren’t paying too much.”

EXPANSION SHOCK
A second New Zealand team was seen as a fait accompli in the NRL’s march towards a 20-team competition by the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
But there is no guarantee expansion is headed to Christchurch.
V’landys believes Queensland can sustain a fifth NRL team following the outstanding success of the Broncos’ River City rivals the Dolphins, who enter their fourth season in 2026.
Brisbane’s western corridor, stretching out to Ipswich and Toowoomba, is crying out for an NRL team and V’landys says the ARLC hasn’t closed the door on Queensland.
“A second New Zealand team is a genuine option, but so is Queensland,” he said.
“We haven’t made up our mind.

Perth and PNG are both set to enter the NRL in coming years. Picture: Paul Kane/Getty Images
“We have left ourselves open on a timeline.
“We have to get the Perth Bears and PNG Chiefs going first, making sure they are successful and once we have them bedded down, we will look at the next stage.
“It’s no secret we want 20 teams and that initiative came from Nick Politis (Roosters chairman).
“A few years ago he got up at an NRL general meeting and said, ‘If this sport is to be successful, we need 20 teams’, and he is 100 per cent correct.
“Who can argue with a man who has made billions?
“I think Queensland can accommodate another team, absolutely, I don’t see why not. Queensland is a rugby league state.
“‘FLA’ (AFL) can try all it can ... but Queensland will always be home to rugby league.”
5 billion for 5 years is utter nonsense
maybe for 7 years yea

3 billion for 5 years is also utter nonsense

I think 700 mill pa is a realistic number

Because it isn't as simple as 1 + 2 = 3

PVL has said a lot stuff over time.

The makeup of the season

FTA exclusive games.

Length of the season

All go into it

We don’t know what the new season length will be though … it he is talking about top players salaries going up 50 percent .,, I’m not sure the game numbers will be reducing too much as well

I’m gunna stick to one topic only now to try to make the discussion more easy to follow.., the new rights amount you are at $560m + internationals is a lot higher than what you were predicting six months ago …I think that’s more realistic where we will end up ..,you were previously around 450m I believe ?

We don't know that but I don't see how Storm, Broncos, Souths and any of the other big clubs you want to throw in. Play 4 less games and the TV pays 50% more.

FTA won't have any interest in PNG v most sides.

So give them that or a 2nd NQ v Broncos game, option 2 will always win.

We are on more than $450m now. I doubted getting near $600m, If the comp changed to 20 rounds.

I don't see that happening now, so the predictions change

The current deal is 2 billion over 5 years @ 400 mill per year - clubs currently receive around 18 million - salary cap / football department cap plus other expenses

Clubs could receive between 24 to 28 million depending on the new broadcast deal ( 3 billion over 5 years or 5 billion over 7 years)- salary cap/football department cap and other expenses

The actually salary cap would be between 17 to 19 million - Not sure if all players have rachet clauses in their contracts for when the cap increases?

NRLW players should be close to if not full time professional in this next broadcast deal.

According to the DT the NRL's revenue for 2025 was over 800 million - 400 mill of that is the broadcast deal with a 65 million surplus

Not sure what the percentage split is of the games revenue - players and NRL - it was reported as being in the 40% range for players

So based on the 40% of 800 million that would be 320 million - around 18 odd million per club which clubs are currently receiving

They want to reach 1 billion in revenue - be 19 teams though

If still 40% - 400 million divided by 19 would be around 21 to 22 million per club - RLPA will want a higher percentage of the revenue one suggests - at least 50%

If 50% - 500 mill divided by 19 is around 26 to 27 million per club.

From the Hello Sport interview with PVL regarding the broadcast deal ..

- What you have to understand is Australia is a very small market… more people live in California than the whole of Australia

- We don’t want to inconvenience the fan … our preferred model is one subscription and one FTA deal only

- AFL have “lost “ 500k fans “ who haven’t gone to the subscription model” following steep increases since their big new broadcast deal ( which we pay also as NRL fans at the moment although no mention of that) : we don’t want to lose any viewers …we want to have some control over the pricing

- Our broadcasters pay for production - $40 million a year ..,

Im starting to get some vibes that things are getting talked down a tad … hope I’m wrong about that

Not sure if all players have rachet clauses in their contracts for if and when the salary cap increases.

If revenue does reach 1 billion and is sustainable then clubs could receive up to 27 to 28 million in grants - possibly more- the players salary cap could be around 20 to 22 million - almost double. 100% increase

If that occurs a player on 1 million a year with a rachet clause could then be on 2 million with a 100% cap increase - which I figure is what V'landy's is talking about - 2 million dollar players

The AFL one is a strange one for him to mention, as it was the AFL having one less FTA game (Sat night) then they used to (i.e. copying the current NRL model)

Its stands to reason that having a FTA Sat night game all season in the NRL would lead to far more viewers than the equivalent STV coverage, but is the financial cost worth it? (i.e. I assume STV pay more than having higher ratings on FTA is worth).

I could see us taking production in-house (the irony that PVL did get rid of the Digital department, which he jokingly blamed on the HSP in the interview when talking about Chammas' history with the NRL). If we paid NEP directly we could theoretically sell a TNF or MNF game to a streamer. Plus it would perhaps give more flexibility to regional grounds where, at the moment and on the other thread, broadcasters might be reluctant because of costs.

Maybe there is a lack of bidding tension between the networks. In about six months, origin series would have just concluded.

It is hard to do a tv deal in the off season where the code, respectively is out of sight, out of mind. So the NRL needs to do the dealing in the middle of the season. And maybe do it after origin, especially if there is record ratings.

If my memory serves me correctly, the AFL signed off on their deal in September-finals time!
