Or is it just that he didnt play NSWRL....

You nailed it. Politis etc are just used to bending the rules to suit their clubs and now that the commission are looking to make decisions that favour Rugby League in general not just a favoured few their noses are out of joint. If it's right the talk that Grant wants to inject money into the grass roots of the game is great news.

He said this exact thing in a radio interview that was posted in this forum somewhere. Worth tracking down.

The clubs would be pushing for Pearce as he's more malleable to their interests than Grant. Seriously, what is the need to having former players on the Commission? Stack them in the NRL administration to give footy knowledge but there is no need at this consultancy level. The bloke's history after coaching is as a stumbling commentator and a motivational speaker, I'm not sure what he adds as a board member to a hundred million dollar plus industry.

Pearce is a joke even on the board let alone being promoted as Chairman. If that ever happened, which I doubt very much, the lunatics have definitely taken over the asylum.

"Wayne Pearce, a former international as is Grant, has been suggested as a replacement for him. Pearce's term on the commission concludes early next year. It is understood club chairmen prefer an elite former player as ARLC chairman, as the AFL have historically done."

Grants games for Australia dont qualify him as elite??

Or is it just that he didnt play NSWRL....

I like the way they are touting Dec 2nd as some kind of D-day for the game. It is just the date the NRL will present back to the clubs an offer. if the clubs don't like it I'm sure the negotiations will continue. License signing and the $3million sweetener aside the new offer wont kick in until 2018 anyway will it?

I wonder how strong the solidarity of the 12 clubs is? I am sure their are a few club boards that are dribbling at the thought of getting an extra $3million into their struggling bank accounts.

I think the funding would kick in as soon as next season

Nine have already paid some of the money from the next deal ($50 Mil) right?

This is what will be getting carved up like a Christmas turkey..

That is a 'bonus' payment of $3m over the next two years, but it's somewhat seperate from the funding negotiations where clubs want the grant increased to 130% of the salary cap, presumably by next season.

Isn't it close to that already and with the extra $1.5mill will be in excess?

2015 $8mill club grant - $6.1mill top tier "official" salary cap
2016 and 2017 $9.5million grant - $6.8mill salary cap

ARLC should never have offered it as a bonus payment, the clubs will want this bonus AND a grant increase. They should have offered them $9.5mill grant for 2016+17

Agreed.

This whole thing with clubs apparently wanting 30% on top of the salary cap is just a way for them to use the RLPA as their negotiators. The higher the salary cap, the more the clubs receive.

It effectively gives the clubs and the RLPA a stronger position to negotiate with.

I'd honestly be ok with clubs getting 30% on top of the salary cap. But clubs should also be capped on how much they can spend on their football departments. So that 30% extra can only be used for coaching, fitness programs, supplement programs, etc etc. All other club income must go towards increasing revenue.

Or have it the other way. At least half of that extra 30% must be used to increase revenue. The other half can be to pay off debt.

News Corp swoops on NRL rights

Date
November 25, 2015 - 10:06PM

Media Reporter

The National Rugby League is poised to announce a historic rights deal with Fox Sports, with the News Corp-owned pay-television broadcaster believed to have acquired the rights to the crucial Saturday night game from the free-to-air rights holder Nine Entertainment Co for around $175 million over five years.

Fairfax Media understands that the NRL commission will meet on Thursday morning to sign off the deal with an announcement expected soon after.

It deal follows Nine's five-year $925 million contract signed with the NRL in August, when the league broke with tradition and negotiated the free-to-air rights separate from the pay television rights.

The Saturday game is seen as crucial for Fox Sports so that it can maintain exclusivity over NRL games played on that day. Nine had previously been prepared to sell back the game for $40 million per year, while Fox Sports was prepared to pay $30 million. It is understood the parties met in the middle at close to $35 million.

It marks a remarkable turnaround by News Corp after it was snubbed by the NRL in August, sparking a concerted and ultimately successful campaign by News to oust the then-NRL chief executive Dave Smith.

Announcing a $2.508 billion six-year deal with rival code the Australian Football League in August, News Corp co-chairman Rupert Murdoch hit out at the NRL saying: "We've always preferred Aussie Rules and we've always believed this is the premium code in Australia," he said. "I guess we will engage with the NRL in ti

Not surprised if fox got Saturday exclusive back , but I'll be very disappointed if there isn't something to compensate for losing a FTA time slot. Even if that's another FTA slot.

Just going by the article the maths don't add up, 25m pa simulcasting & 35m pa sat game means Nine paying just 625m/5 yrs, and if the entire rights deal is allegedly worth 1.8bn, including Telstra & NZ, it means fox would be paying shit all for the other four games.
