I always wait until I see the final deal as I do understand it may not occur. I was just pointing out how dumb an idea it is and why, regardless of whether it is for part of a season or for a full season. It would become as popular with people attending games as Monday night football currently is, and I somehow doubt the clubs would be happy with that.

Also I don't write letters in blood. I get too light headed if I do. :shock: So, I use tomato sauce instead.

At this stage I don't know what to believe re the TV deal.Friday 6pm sux.Won't work for games played in Sydney.
I'd want $2.25bn for the total deal ,if this happens.

Is that Fox Sports article saying there is going to be matches from Thursday to Monday next year? As good as that sounds for me I don't think the clubs would be too happy

Record NRL rights deal worth $1.8bn, dedicated pay-TV channel

The NRL has signed a $1.8 billion five-year TV rights deal in the past hour, which will include a dedicated pay-TV channel from the 2017/18 season.

The record deal will be officially announced later today after all-night talks at Sydney-based lawyers Clayton Utz, The Australian has learnt.

Nine has surrendered the Saturday match to News Corp’s sports programming broadcaster Fox Sports for $35m a year.

The Monday night match will cease under the new agreeement.

The pay-TV component secured by Fox also includes a Sunday match, and Friday night game.

Simulcast rights will be shared by all Fox, Nine and Telstra.

Negotiations took place between the NRL and executives representing News Corp, the Nine Network and Telstra.

Executives representing the News Corp side were Australian chief executive Peter Tonagh, former CEO Julian Clarke, Fox Sports CEO Patrick Delaney and commercial director Scott Briggs.

Nine had group general counsel Amanda Laing, chief operating officer Simon Kelly and general counsel Rachel Launders in its corner.

Telstra’s media and marketing director Joe Pollard was leading the talks for the telecommunications giant, while NRL commissioners Jeremy Sutcliffe, John Grant and Graeme Samuel were representing the code.

It is understood telecommunications group Optus made a late play for the overall pay-TV and digital rights _ in the wake of taking on the English Premier League rights for about US$45 million a year _ but baulked at the high relative cost of rugby league.

So News Corp have finally confirmed Optus wanted both pay-TV and digital rights.

Although the five-year deal was due to begin from the 2018 season, it may start a year earlier.

This is a big deal if true. It will prevent the AFL from having a $400 million deal the year the NRL is on the last year of much smaller current contract. It will also mean the NRL gets out of their TV deal sooner to test the ITV market post NBN while the AFL are stuck in a 6 year deal.

Friday games no longer played concurrently.
Thursday night effectively instead of Monday night.

So only 3 FTA games, an awful 6pm Friday slot, less money than the AFL and no expansion. Sounds we got f*cked if true. At least it's only 5 years so we get to move first next time.
