the projected figures were in the paper,

Nine $600m
Fox $800m
Telstra $120m
NZ $150m

Total $1.67b

Telstra is light imo, digital should be the largest increase, unless online rights remain with foxtel, but if that's the case then foxtel is light.

Telstra is light. NZ is high without a 2nd team. They barely got 100mill last time around and was signed the days before the season started.

CHANNEL Nine boss David Gyngell says Queensland is ready for a fourth NRL team as the network prepares a record $600 million package to clinch rugby league’s next TV rights deal.

In a glowing endorsement of Queensland rugby league, Gyngell is convinced Brisbane can sustain a second team to rival the Broncos in a move that would be a ratings goldmine for the Nine Network.

“Another team in Brisbane would be great for the NRL and rugby league,” Gyngell said.

But Queensland’s hopes of expansion by 2018 could be thwarted by a bloc of Sydney-based NRL clubs eyeing greater financial rewards from rugby league’s next broadcasting contract.

Gyngell is currently at the coalface of negotiations to retain a share of the NRL’s TV rights for the 2018-2022 seasons.

The deal is tipped to be worth $1.7 billion, the richest in Australian sporting history, and the Channel Nine CEO is determined to stave off bids from the rival Seven and Ten networks.

The Sunday Mail can reveal:

* The Nine Network will up the ante by more than $100m in its joint bid with Fox Sports. Nine paid $475m as part of the NRL’s landmark $1.025b deal in 2012;

* Rugby league’s showpiece, State of Origin, is valued at around $150 million, well shy of initial $500m estimates;

* Nine will consider taking on four games and screen one live on Saturday nights. Fox is bidding to show every NRL game live from 2018;

* State of Origin will not be sold as a stand-alone package as has been previously touted; and

* A second Brisbane team would be worth $30m annually to the new broadcast deal.

elstra is poised to pull back from paying big fees for digital sports broadcasting rights, a move that will come as a blow to the NRL and AFL, which are both in the market for billion-dollar rights deals.
The telco giant believes the digital rights are too costly and instead will seek to partner with sports and stadiums on technology and production services, while acting as an aggregator for other rights holders to stream content through its upcoming Telstra TV service.
"This is driving the sports crazy," said one source, who noted that the sports would increase the pressure on broadcasters such as Seven West Media, Foxtel and Nine Entertainment Co to pay big money for digital rights to complement their free-to-air and pay-TV live rights.
The broadcasters, having seen the stunning popularity of Seven's app and digital coverage of 2015's Australian Open tennis tournament via the 7 website and sports apps, are keen to sign up for digital content. However, whether they will pay more than Telstra has been paying is questionable.

National Rugby League fans will be able to watch more live games on free-to-air TV and on Channel Nine’s digital platforms under the new broadcast rights deal announced today.

Nine Entertainment Co announced this morning it had secured NRL broadcast rights for the 2018 to 2022 seasons.

Under the new deal, four games will be broadcast live from Thursday to Sunday – one more than the current three.

All finals, State of Origin and any other special event matches will also be shown live.

In addition to television broadcasts, the network has also acquired the rights to live stream those games across its digital platforms.

The deal will cost the network an average of $185 million per year, which will be reduced if the NRL elects to grant pay simulcast rights for certain games.

The broadcaster said more than 270 hours of football will be broadcast live and free each season, double the amount under the current deal.

Nine Entertainment Co CEO David Gyngell hailed the deal as a game-changer for NRL fans.

“Rugby League is part of Nine’s DNA,” Mr Gyngell said.

“This is a transformational outcome for supporters, Rugby League and Nine, enabling viewers to see the best of the NRL, live and free, 4 days per week, anywhere, on any device.

“As the audience for television fragments, the value and marketing power of free, live premium sport across multiple media cannot be underestimated.”

Channel Nine has televised the NRL under its Wide World of Sports banner since 1992.

NINE ACQUIRES NRL RIGHTS

SYDNEY, 10 August 2015: Nine Entertainment Co. (ASX:NEC) has executed an agreement for premium National Rugby League (NRL) rights for the 2018 to 2022 seasons.

Under this agreement, NEC has acquired the exclusive Free-to-Air rights to broadcast 4 premium live games a week on each of Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons, as well as the Finals series, State-of-Origin, and other special event matches. NEC has also acquired all free streaming rights for these games. The National Rugby League may elect to grant the pay simulcast rights for certain games, but otherwise the live distribution of these games across any free visual media is exclusive to NEC.

NEC’s average cost over the new rights period amounts to $185m per annum, inclusive of contra, which will be reduced if the NRL elects to grant pay simulcast rights for certain games.

Rugby League fans will enjoy a vastly improved experience – four premium live games each week, more than doubling live coverage to over 270 hours per season, all of which will be available free across Nine’s Free-to-Air television and digital media.

David Gyngell, CEO of NEC, said: “Rugby League is part of Nine’s DNA. This is a transformational outcome for supporters, Rugby League and Nine, enabling viewers to see the best of the NRL, live and free, 4 days per week, anywhere, on any device.

As the audience for television fragments, the value and marketing power of free, live premium sport across multiple media cannot be underestimated.”

Don't have a source for it beyond a Mediaspy post but that's Nine's press release.

So Buzz was only out by $325 million, with Fox, some online and NZ to come, the NRL would have to be aiming for $2bil now.

I read somewhere the $185 million per year can be reduced if fox are allowed to simulcast games. This feels rushed!

With the EPL starting to be broadcast in 4K in England, potentially having the NRL in SD in 2022 is depressing.

Not really, there's no reason to discuss that point too much. Nine would have to wait til after fox decide what they want to do. It is just a clause in the deal to save 9 a bit of cash.

I think it's great that simulcast has been mentioned as a possibility by nine and has not been written in the new Deal as a no go. It appears that having simulcast games may be in the hands of fox sports and how much they are willing to pay for it.
