Who'd have thought Smith was better than Bradford

FWIW Grossman > Smith

Smith's upside has been shown.... he can manage a game, but dont rely on him. Bradford is in his 2nd year, and so far has shown alot more upside than Smith.

I will give Alex Smith credit, the kid must be mentally tough. To be replaced time and time again, and just keep signing his name on a contract..... either that or he has a mental issue.

Just outlayed for gamepass. So awesome. Watched the Bengals replay at work, now getting the KC vs Pats game live.

Will be doing this every year from now on in.

At least the AFC south has two half decent teams. NFC west is the 49ers and then daylight. But that's just my opinion anyway, the fact that other people agree with me makes me think I'm onto something

haha, using espn talking heads as your backup.

Do the 49ers resign Smith if they lose to Green Bay in the playoffs? Do they sign someone like Matt Flynn to start?

if they want to dominate the NFC-W but ultimately be found out in the play offs then they can probably do that comfortably with Alex Smith until the other sides improve their rosters enough to compete

if they want to win a SB, which is what id imagine their goal is, i dont think Alex Smith is a SB winning QB. Kaepernick is a 2nd round pick from last year so maybe Smith holds the fort for another season or two whilst Harbough grooms Kaepernick.

It really remains to be seen, Alex Smith a few years ago showed glimpses of brilliance but in essence was anti clutch.
He's done very well this year, how he performs in the playoffs is where the answer lies....so if they do lose and it's a lot to do with Smith then he'll be on borrowed time.

I think for what the Niners are doing at the moment, he's a good fit but I don't believe he'll be able to lift them from playoffs to SB contender.

Wait where have they been found out in the playoffs?

Look at Trent Dilfer's Ravens in 2000, there's a few similarities between them and the current Niners team, not saying they'll follow the same path but some similarities no doubt.

Grossman wouldn't be good enough to be on the depth chart for Australia's team

Grossman sucks. Smith has had a pretty unlucky run. He's had a different offensive co-ordinator every year and a new offense to learn. Add to that he's had nothing but trash to throw to until recent years and had the weight of the world on his shoulders.

He's been consistent this year. Moves the chains and hasn't been turning the ball over a great deal.

He's safe and has been pretty clutch in the past when the game is on the line. The Niners rely on their running game and defense though. They don't have the players to play catch up.

By virtue of the fact they havent been in the play offs recently they havent had the chance to be found out there. i suspect with Alex Smith under centre they will be this year.

I think the current niners team is much like the middle 00's Vikings team. A great running game, great defense but lacking the passing game. I wasnt an NFL fan back in 2000 so cant comment on Dilfer's SB winning ravens team but on paper there is certainly some similarities between them

At the moment, you're going on hope that Smith, is capable of being the guy now he has a good coach. We're all going on his track record.

One thing is for sure, we're going to know whether Alex Smith is made of the right stuff in a few months because the Niners are going to the play offs, probably nabbing the 2nd seed and will have to beat teams like the Packers, Saints to win the SB. Will be very interesting to see how he fares

In Vernon Davis we have what i believe to be the most talented TE in the game, he'd break records if he had Brady or Brees throwing him the ball. Crabs and Braylon may not be elite but that duo is no where, no where near the worst going around.

Put a Brady, Brees, Manning, Rodgers etc type QB in our team and the 3 receivers i mentioned would be considered elite imo, we all know Harbaugh can coach, look what he's done with Smitty.

I remember that game quite vividly and Touch Down Trent Dilfer did bugger all, all he did was not make mistakes, Smith has at least engineered some comebacks this season.

If he loses to the Packers in the NFC Championship game i don't think we can treat him too harshly because lets be honest, who would beat the Packers in the NFC Championship game? pretty much no one.

The Packers are just like the Melbourne Storm were 5 years ago, pretty much unbeatable haha.

Are you talking about the Culpepper Vikings? They could pass the ball very well to Randy Moss. Culpepper made pro bowls too and had a great 2004.

The Culpepper led team was mentally weak and had a poor culture with drama after drama.

Shame really, definitely was a sweet spot with the talent we had then.

Yeah it was a shame Moss and Culpepper never got to the superbowl. That loss to the Giants was just embarassing. I still reckon that Moss could have passed Rice if his attitude was right. 6-4, freaky speed, great hands, amazing leaping ability, good I.Q. Such a shame...his Oakland years lowered my opinion of him.

it was unbelievable how good they looked the week before making it look so easy against the saints and then how bad they looked against the giants. it was 14-0 before the offense even touched the ball. not that it mattered, they were just as bad. they didn't like the cold, wet conditions and they weren't ready to play.

Yes this year he has made improvements, but previous years he's been anything but clutch.
And what Raider is talking about is putting him in a playoff situation that he hasn't had to deal with since UofU.
And I agree, I don't think he has what it takes to go to the next level.
