No, that's the last thing you want to do. If the US executes him or sanctions a death penalty, it will create a martyr out of the guy. This would then fire up the extremists to avenge his death and lead to greater instability and carnage.

In my opinion, the best thing is to try him for war crimes before an international tribunal and broadcast proceedings. Once he is found guilty, lock him up in prison in a western country (Israel would be a good choice) and throw away the key. Like Rudolf Hess in Spandau Prison. Let him live the rest of his life on his own with just the prison guards for company. For someone who has lived almost all his life in a position of power and thriving on the misfortune and suffering of others, this is a greater indignity and a more effective punishment than a quick and remoresless execution.

Saddam may have a few followers but he's not really popular enough to have much of an extremist following. The tiny, tiny number of people who are pro-Saddam is offset by 25 million Iraqis who are glad to see him gone.

Israel would be a good choice, but that would guarantee some anti-Israeli stunt by the Arabs. Israel really f**k their enemies up, like the bloke who they nailed who took photos inside Israel's nuclear facilities and tried to sell them to the press. Looks like solitary confinement for the rest of his life in degrading conditions.

If anyone is interested in Israel I recommend you read a book called Gideon's Spies, it's a fascinating overview of Israel's intelligence agency which starts off with Mossad's involvement in Princess Diana's death.
