Nine commentary and presentation

The first NRLW try on Saturday involved a wide shift and long-range finish from Tiana Penitani for Sharks. The move was almost over before the lead resumed contemporaneous calling. Allana Ferguson was still talking about a previous play.
Witnessed an even worse example of non-commentary in Cowboys/Tigers NRLW.

Tigers scored a good try, multiple pairs of hands involved in the move. Accompanying commentary went something like "watch every medal, every moment live and free on 9 and 9Gem, blah blah blah, stream 20 channels on 9Now, blah blah blah, tune in for an incredible Paralympics experience now showing on 9 and 9Now".

Once a commentator embarks on a long incestuous promo spiel, literally nothing stops him pursuing it to the bitter end. The RL game currently playing ceases to matter.

Gould seems to be on the way out, Joey needs to follow and surely there's someone better than Matt Thompson... "This is just incredible" about half a dozen times during the call. Get someone that doesn't have the vocabulary range of the average punter on the couch
Salty is a far better option, he did the NRLW and Reggie's.

I was watching the GF wondering to myself " is this a good game ?" And then Thompson told me a dozen times it was. So yeah, I guess it was a good game.

Ch 9 need to up the production values by watching what overseas competitions like the NFL do and even AFL. Some simple things and some more comprehensive changes.

- mic the crowd better so we can hear the crowd atmosphere, not make it sound quiet on tv
- invest in more elements of the pre game entertainment. The singer was a good choice but they could’ve amped it up
- change the commentators to actually talented ones
- more pre game activities around the stadium and around the country, ie cross to live sites, have entertainment at live sites etc
- sort out the audio mix of the pre game entertainment and have more rehearsals including of how to film it
- bring back painted in goals and team logos

Somewhere in the late nineties, they started to overstuff the commentary box and become cross promoters and wannabe comedians.
The anecdotal crap and blokey, matey in-jokes are tiresome. The amount of idiots they have is nauseating.

In game : One commentator, one analyst and one sideline/colour commentator is fine. Gould’s tired sound is redundant. Blokes like Joey, Spud, Blocker and Lockyer should never be in game callers.

Pre / post match : bang in your ex players but coherent ones with some media training and not just smirky ‘how does this feel?’.

Funnily enough, people who have never played the game can be excellent callers and analysts.
