Nine commentary and presentation

I think I've worked out what it is about TV coverage, particularly Ch9, that I'm not liking.

Just watching the 2x Vegas games, and the Fox League crew are all there. All the commentators, ect. They are at the ground, commentating live at the game, getting the feel and voice of the crowd. Ch9 commentators are mostly sitting in a studio in Sydney, watching and commentating on what they're watching on TV. And sadly, it shows that they're sitting in a sterile room and not amongst 40,000 people going nuts.

The other thing I have noticed for some time is how dialled down the crowd noise is compared to other sports. Watching the Roosters-Broncos game, the crowd sounds subdued, but when you see the pre-game, half-time, and post-game on ground interviews, ect, the crowd noise is deafening. So either the microphones are too far from the crowd, or they're intentionally turned down to nearly 0 so that we at home can completely focus on the commentators.

Personally, I'd prefer all commentators be commentating at the grounds, and crowd noise volume to be turned up a bit, not to completely drown out the commentators, but to make the game feel as big and exciting as it should be.

Yeh watched 2 min on channel 9 just to see the difference (always watch on fox especially with 4k) and it was like they were at a funeral.

I don't understand why the commentators weren't in las vegas but the pre game crew were.

'The home of rugby league...'

It's actually generally the opposite for NRL games. Channel 9 always have commentators at the games they show. The Fox commentators are at the ones they exclusively cover, but for the ones simulcasted on both (Thu, Fri night, Sun arvo) the Fox commentators are usually in the studio.

Agreed it's 100 times better when the commentators are at the game.

It's the worst for the Warriors games, having Aussies commentating from the Fox Sydney studio loses all the atmosphere.

Tbf to Nine, sending out commentators and crew for just one game in the US may not be feasible. Whereas with Fox, they were covering both games.

What is underrated is that Nine will now show four fta games in round 1.
Yeh but they sent people over to do pre game stuff, but not the actual commentators where it would have mattered. I watched 2 minutes of the 9 coverage and the difference was night and day just in the atmosphere and excitement of the callers.
Granted I don't usually watch 9 because fox is just better quality and I can't stand to listen to joey and Freddy's inane and irrelevant 'commentating', it is so cringeworthy.

How red hot are channel 9.

I see they also put a complaint into the NRL about Triple M video recording the interview with Latrell.

Which has stopped all radio partners now video recording there interviews for social media.

This is the same mob on sunday arvo games that piss off straight to the news the moment a full-time whistle is blown.

Last year we had one of the great knockout semi-finals between Newcastle and Canberra that went to Extra time and past 6-pm.

They cut straight to the news at full-time with no post match interviews.

Anyone noticed Matt Thompson and Cam Smith are becoming as big of whingers as Gus and Joey ?

I can't stand the bombardment of negativity from the 9 crew. I had to mute the sound after the Walsh May head clash, I knew it would set them off for the next hour and post game.

For the first time in a long time I watched a bit of the Nine coverage tonight, it almost put me to sleep. It was like they were all waiting for it to be over so they could go elsewhere, at one point Melbourne scored whilst I wasn't looking, I had no idea because there was zero emotion from Thompson or Joey.
Flipped it over to Vossy on Fox and realised this was a pretty good game of footy.

Thompson's a strange one. Try commentaries oscillate wildly between ear-splitting euphoria and perfunctory anaesthesia. Seems to correlate more with his mood than the action on the field. As though he's randomly mixing uppers and downers throughout the game.

And to top off why I cant stand Nine nowadays, I turned on the Today Show this morning, the Breakfast show on the "Home of Rugby League", and they are broadcasting live from Adelaide for the AFL Gather Round (Magic Round ripoff) which is televised on their main competitor.
Meanwhile they couldn't be stuffed sending their main commentator to Vegas, just had him call the game from the studio in Sydney.

Who ever had the idea to commentate games in a studio watching a screen should be fired immediately.

Last night they couldn't even bother to drive 2 hrs up the road to Newcastle.

You can tell straight away when they're calling from the studio, ZERO atmosphere and the commentators have no feel for the game and spend most the game talking about thier favourite coffee shops.

Fox are just as bad doing their pre game from the studio, you sit there for an hour watching 3 people sit in a studio having a chat, whereas the AFL do all their pre and post games at the stadium, gives a much better vibe and buildup.

Yours is a very valid point, and one I've also long been highly critical of. Ch9 whore themselves out to aussie rules. Kissing up to them at all opportunities. They don't have the rights, yet always have aussie rules programmes on their network. Maybe this is more noticeable in places like WA, where I live, but it's terrible. They're just promoting a sport that is on another network. A direct rival competitor.
Do ANY other networks promote as heavily sports not shown on their networks? How many NRL shows are on Ch7? Does Ch10 host cricket shows during the summer?

I think Ch9 and aussie rules are alone in this scenario, and all it does is promote a sport not on your network, and thus promotes another network over your own.
Just for the kiss-arse points Ch9 wants from aussie rules.

Id like to see them and Sunrise do the same thing for Magic Round and I wouldnt be surprised if that doesnt happen this year.

Our Magic round is waaay better than the 'one venue or one city rounds' and we play it at one ground, rather than 3 grounds 20km apart from each other and you have to hire a car haha.

But seriously if Ch 9 dont do that in Brisbane their "home of Rugby league" slogan makes them look even more stupid. The Karl is so fake and sucks up to everyone its ridiculous. I like a lot of people barely watch their coverage and cant get into it. Its just a shame we have to put up with them 4 times a year, State of Origin and Grand Final and the commentary is just garbage and boring. Johns sounds like he doesnt want to be there, Fittler can barely string too words together. And dont get me started on that show on Monday night where Gallen just wants to argue with Gus all the time and sound like a fool.
