Good band, labelled overrated way too much. Certainly better bands from the genre/era but none more influential and their influence was a very good thing.

Was a fan as a teenager, but have gone off them a bit since as my tastes have expanded and changed. I think most people will tell you they were a Nirvana fan at some point of their lives, so they definitely have a lot of influence imo.

It's cool to say nirvana were overrated but they changed the music landscape like no band has since.

That's it. Their influence will forever be felt.

And all this overrated talk is garbage, very few people had a knack for a hook like Cobain did, and certainly more than Dave Grohl does. If any band should be classified as overrated, it's the Foo Fighters.

I saw them in Toronto not long before Kurt topped himself.

They were tasteful in their influences, and their better stuff is good quality. Nevermind did have a big influence on the industry at the time. It was good to see "real" bands having success. It has all been watered down and the industry is really a shadow of its former self when it comes to small or medium-sized bands getting label promotion but that's progress I guess.

I loved them in my early teens and have continued to do so since.
I agree they were not the pick of the bands of the same era (personally, i think that honour goes to either soundgarden or alice in chains), but they made great music which still stands up today.
So what if they were not a technically brilliant band? I still listen to them reguarly and i cant say the same for a lot of other bands i have become fans of through different points of my life.

+ 100000. Never understood why this pop band was so popular with the "alt" crowd.

dave grohl was writing songs while he was in Nirvana.
....and there is a reason why he never took them to the band...how could he when Cobain was coming out with , lounge act, dumb, pennyroyal tea, aneurysm , lovebuzz in bloom , lithium etc etc.

No doubt Dave Grohl is supremely talented but for my taste the Foo Fighters are deliberately mainstream and commercial. Nothing wrong with that either. Grohl cashed in on his cred with the grunge and metal crowd but he didn't fool me :)

An awesome band. Over-rated? To some maybe. Not to me. They were very influential and changed the landscape of music for my generation. I stopped listening to them for a while but put In Utero on the other week. Jesus that is an awesome album.

Funnily enough, when they first came out Kurt and Dave thought they sounded too much like The Pixies. I saw a doco on it and how Kurt would do a lot of the 'quiet...loud...quiet...loud' stuff in their songs which is what Frank Black used to do.

They certainly did, but in terms of how 'good' they were, well there were a sh*tload of better grunge bands.

People say they were over-rated not because it's cool to say so but because it's true.

No doubting their importance though.

They were very famous very quickly.
If you recall any sort of music getting played on the radio back then and you will how different they were.
I remember the year well ....I was travelling and the radio was on non stop.
This is what they were up against when they broke in Aus.
rat cat
gnr use your illusion 1 and 2
Screaming Jets - better
Bryan Adams - everything I do etc etc
Micheal Jackson - whatever the fug it was...
Barnsie was doing soul deep
Metallica - black album.

it was either big hair rock or fuggen radio friendly chick shyte.

If it weren't for Nirvana, nobody ( especially here in Australia )would have heard of most of the other bands from Seattle.

So I think they were not over rated at all.
They opened the door with a perfect combo of basic punk and pop.

It was a genius idea.
Nevermind is and will always be an absolute classic 10/10 album.
like
Appetite for destruction. - GnR
Hi Fi Way - You Am I
Electric - The Cult
Head Injuries - The Oils
Fresh Fruit - DK's
Bollocks - Sex Pistols
..and dare I say it......arctic Monkeys debut.

start to finish ...unreal.

Overrated="Look at me, I'm some knob jockey who sits on an online internet forum claiming to be the Bill Collins of alternative early 90s punk rock."

Terrific band. Great sound. Get deeper into their songs aside from their radio hits in particular and you'll see a real sketchy enigmatic skid to their music.
