No Australian tv deal yet!

Buzz had an article today comparing the potential Kangaroos side to who was picked last time. Perhaps a sign that Fox may be close to doing a deal if they are willing to report on it

They are the Home of Rugby League insofar as they broadcast it and can make money doing so. Clearly they don't see the WC in that light at the current asking price, and nor do the three other major FTA networks. The time difference would certainly not help.

The last part has nailed it.

The live viewing numbers would be very low. Delayed numbers would be higher but you would just skip the ads in that case

Perfect for a streaming service where people can catch games when they like and minis. if ch9 was smart (haha) they’d use it as a vehicle to get people on stan.

Might end up on Stan but that is the market for it. FTA would end up on a minor channel but perfect to watch in lunch break

You'd think with the risk of NRL fans turning off Kayo after the GF that Fox would be all over it to hold subscribers

What real risk is there of this?

I'm sure there are some people who only have kayo for NRL but I would think the majority would be content with cricket and the American sport offerings in the off-season.

As opposed to the IRL who can't even run tests?
Their ability to run tests is hampered by the power exerted of the two guys now being handed the TV rights.

Australia want to turn league into another AFL where only Oz plays it.

The IRL doesnt 'run' tests, that's not its role. It sanctions test matches organized by members, is responsible for rugby league International rules and compiles the world rankings. It is made up of all the member countries, it is not a separate entity or organization as it is made up of all countries and governed by a board representing RFL.ARLC and NZRL plus some others.

So why does it fall back on ARLC to run internationals then?

That is on Australia if they go down that path though.

The rest can have a quality international program and leave Australia behind

No they can't. The NRL controls all the money. IRL can't do anything without the NRL's blessing.

It's dreamland to think otherwise.

Then why have an organisation then?

They want Origin to have rep weeks?

Make Tonga and Samoa Tier 1. That then will get the clubs to pressure the ARLC

Then they can have meaningful discussions about a rep window but ATM. NRL rightfully are looking after their best interests

This is correct....the game is now run by the clubs...they were the ones who stopped last years WC.

Depressing if true

Reckon the FIFA World Cup has any problem selling the rights in Australia when the matches are on in the middle of the night?
All you are acknowledging here is that RL is a minnow as an international sport compared to soccer. There can be only one reason no-one has picked up the RLWC in Australia. The asking price is too high.

Because it us up to the competing countries to organise their test matches. IRL just sanctions them. Smith developed a pacific strategy as he could see how important the pacific players are to the game, this included increased tests so they didnt feel they were missing out at origin time (and being a Union man he knows the value of the international game for a sport). Ch9 wanted the extra 50k viewers on a Weds night so Vlandys has canned them, for no extra money I might add!

Now there is no way that Tonga and Samoa can just organise a test match between themselves mid season as the NRL players rightfully wouldn't be released. NZRL is in the ARLC's pocket as we saw witht he RLWC decisin so they aren't doing anything that isnt ok'd by Australia. Ergo its up to the ARLC when and where tests are played in this part of the world.

At least in England the RFL has created a second tier Knights team to give other Euroean countries some international opportunity.

Or the perceived interest is too low, and a lot of that lays on the shoulders of the NRL and its media partners. Its not like there aren't fans of RL in the country! So you have to ask why those fans aren't interested in watching their national team. Fans are sheep they follow what they are told, hence Origin being so big as that's all that's talked about from Wk1 of the season. I'd be lucky to have heard the RLWC mentioned more than a dozen times on fox since the season started.
