The reason I was having a go at your post was to try and "return serve", to see if you realised how it felt when someone makes broad generalisations about your beliefs. Clearly you're not interested in the "free will to decide what you think is the truth" when it comes to certain people - or your generalised pre-judged (hi Korny) perception of certain people anyway?

No mate I just don't like Islam. Christians did some stupid shit too but about 400 years ago we got it out of our system and now usually don't kill innocent people in the name of our faith. Islam however still does and these people seem to be unhappy everywhere they are. The only countries that they seem content is Christian lead countries such as ours. We still are one aren't we ? Or should we just go multi anything goes there too?

Having said that, the overarching position that HJ and Avenger have put forward about people feeling disenfranchised and being empathetic to conservative thinking is true. People are sick of "the system" (Hi Casper/Witch) and feel let down so anyone who campaigns on a populist conservative platform will succeed in getting voted in (or more importantly getting the person responsible for "the system" voted out).

HJ is acting like this is something new but it has been happening for some time. He also thinks that things will substantially change and "leftys" will be overrun by whatever team it is that he supports (rightys perhaps?). He is fairly confident too. I don't share this confidence and here's why.

Ultimately, those that successfully campaign on a conservative platform eventually reach the point where they are judged by their actions rather than their words. If their actions don't result in a net improvement to someone's quality of life then that person is going to feel let down. When you feel let down you are likely to "shop around" for a better deal and if that better deal comes in the form of a campaign based on hope, inclusiveness and fairness (aka leftoid thinking in HJ and Avenger's narrow world), then they will jump at the chance.

People are very fickle and most importantly unpredictable. To predict with any certainty what people are thinking and how they will respond to future unknown circumstances is virtually impossible. With this in mind, suggesting that a particular way of viewing the world is now "dead" is pretty f**ken stupid.

What's really sad is that I will now be labelled a "lefty" for pointing out the bleeding obvious. Here is a few reasons why it isn't that simple:

• I think people should be treated fairly but I also think that if you are an aggressive go getter then you should be rewarded.

• I am concerned about excessive immigration but also see lots of positives.

• I don't have a strong connection to the environment and don't concern myself with climate change. However, I have tertiary qualifications in environment and understand the issues. Instead, I have chosen to use my skills and knowledge to help advocate strongly for development and influence policy rather than climb aboard the Sea Shepherd.

• I think we should do more about helping our Indigenous population but have been frustrated beyond belief when working with them in the past and have seen them piss away a lot of opportunities that are given to them.

I could provide countless other examples...

Comparing it to the New Testament, simply on the grounds that you dismissed the NT because the texts we have were written around a century after the events.

There may be other legitimate reasons to dismiss the NT as not accurate, but the fact that the texts we have were written 80-100 years after the events are not a legitimate reason to do so.
