The new Windsor bridge to combat local flooding. $120 million. Finished 12 months ago.
It's working well so far.

Well it can sometimes depend on what the design criteria is. If its to cater for a say 1:20 year flood event and we just received a 1:50 or 1:100 year event then the bridge is not to blame.

Its like the peanuts saying they should of opened the dam earlier.
Question one must ask.

How reliable are weather reports and how many days prior to they become accurate.
How long would it take to reduce the Dam 10%
How much would of needed to be drained to make a difference?

It would of been a bold move to empty 30-40% And from what I read that is what would of needed to be done. The other issue is how many days this would take and how many days prior would it need to be done to disperse properly.

I saw a post from the Insurance Council as a defence of people blaming them for insurance being so costly, which left them with no alternative but to be uninsured. (Paraphrasing) they said: if your house insurance (including flood inundation) is $5k-30k more than your friends, then it's probably a good indicator that you shouldn't live there.

Gotta say that I'm unsure if these merkins who put their trophy home on the rivers edge or in the middle of a flood plain deserve my sympathy.

We were considering moving to River Rd into one of those absolutely sexy houses. Be surprised if they’re uninsured. But yeah those nongs who buy working land just so they can build their dream home and maintain a lifestyle that means they can’t afford insurance, little sympathy. Doesn’t stop them loading up the car collection or buying jet skis

weather reports are based on past data but that wont predict the future accurately coz climate change and sttuff.

A new bridge is probabaly a D&C and the brief is from Public Works and whether it gets down to a 1:10 year or 1:100 year will depend on the budget as thats how they work

We've already had 2 1:100 years event so far this century so they really dont mean much.

I have the same opinion of people in these areas surrounded by trees. If you want the serenity I understand but I know friends who live in these spots and do nothing to help protect there house. They will store firewood against house and rarely clean gutters etc.
Then when a bushfire comes we have to try and save these homes.
A lot of your newer insurance companies don't insure them. I feel it's a matter of time before larger ones follow suit or just hammer them with fees. Currently they offset it a little by increasing everyone else's premiums.

I was being a bit cheeky with my pic and comments of the Windsor bridge above.

In reality, there was no point building it higher because if the river level ever reaches the bridge (as it did this past weekend), you wouldn't be able to cross it anyway as the flood plains beyond that would be flooded anyway considering they are lower than the actual bridge itself. It's where all the turf farms are.
The govt did the right thing building it at that level.
