I've worked with so many people who are convinced they earn less when work to much overtime cause jump into the next tax bracket. I've tried to explain it is a sliding scale and impossible for this to happen. But they swear by it.

Yep, they're only tax 'brackets' for the purposes of a starting point for making a calculation.

There are rewards, but they dont come without risks. All I have to do is turn up to work and not fall asleep. I'll happily pay a higher tax rate for that luxury.

Liberalism is such an old idea by now that it's a conservative position. But also, economic liberalism refers to free markets, which is another thing conservatives prefer, at least rich ones. A better term for modern leftists is progressive. They prefer raising taxes on anyone wealthier than themselves.

Definitions vary depending on who is typing.

Right now Bernie is getting sledged because of the Cuba protests, as if his preferred version of socialism is Havana over Oslo.

Right now Bernie is getting sledged because of the Cuba protests, as if his preferred version of socialism is Havana over Oslo.

Norway isn't socialist either though. They are social democrats, which is essentially a welfare state, much like what already exists in the US. But you're right, it's a matter of definitions. There's a Lukas Moodysson film called Tillsammans where a woman leaves her abusive husband to live in her brother's urban Stockholm commune (it's set in the 70s). Late in the film he tries to reconcile with her and she points out she's a socialist and it wouldn't work. He says he's a socialist too and she says no, you're a socialdemokrat. It struck a nerve with me because it's about the time I realised I wasn't a socialist either. Big fan of the welfare state though, within reason.

I'll be honest. I don't even know what a socialist is.
If you think that's funny I had to explain to a friend what pessimistic was. Made it even harder when I said the opposite of optimistic. That had him stumped also.
