Ah yes, the old it-wasn't-real-socialism/communism.

The Nazis were confident that Socialist was appropriate branding for their party and that it wouldn't alienate their base. Clearly the term means what people want it to mean. Without an authoritarian polity (let's call it the state) to crush any competing system, there is no real socialism. Just impoverished communes on the outskirts of more competitive groups.

Nah mate, it's just not socialism, it isn't left, it's fascism. Which is very much the extreme of the right just one step short of totalitarianism, Nationalist Socialism, if you wanna use the actual name they used, and when you add the nationalist to the title, it becomes clear it's about the state, for the state.

This whole wave of attempting to place the Nazi's on the left is just a dumb as f**k idea promoted by the lunatic US right who need to label everything they don't like socialism or leftist. It's idpol nonsense pushed by people who are dumb enough to think that because the state nationalized industry, it's gotta be a socialism. And that because left =bad and right = good, anything that seems bad must be leftist.

It really is that f**king dumb.

My point is socialism isn't incompatible with fascism. The Nazis proved it, right there in the name. 'Socialist' is just a label that is thought to carry inherent virtue by many, much like the terms Democratic or Islamic do in other cultures. Just calling oneself socialist is another type of virtue signalling. The implication is that you care about the downtrodden, even if you're never going to help them until the state forces everyone to do it.

Ahh, you're back into Idpol rather than ideology, where anything can be anything else if you want it to be.

Not a fan TBH, I'm sure it has it's uses, just not sure any of them would be of any particular merit.

Merkins' ideology doesn't usually affect me until it becomes political, so that's when I begin to care about it. It's no different with socialism. In fact I used to identify as a socialist myself when I was younger and stupider but at uni I met other socialists and was cured.

^^^^^^^Yet in recent months CHOICE found there was a ticket for a Paul Kelly concert listed for $741 on Viagogo, up from its original price of $90.

I experienced this in the states. I was in NY and was trying to buy tix for the NY Philharmonic. Same; low price offered, key in details in check out and then 4 pages later after putting in your CC detals etc you are hit with a $400 booking fee. 😖

Eventually I found the real NYP website and bought through Ticketmaster for $75 a seat.

It's conservative vs liberal ideology not really left vs right, though there's a lot of alignment. The thing though about the conservative vote is that when people have little in the way of assets ( so most young people ) they want change, so they'll align liberal, once they gain assets as they get older, well then they want to protect them, so don't want change, and will align more towards conservatives.

It's well known over time that as a population ages, it'll lean more towards conservative ideology, but as a population ages, since the dawn of the boomers, they've also become more wealthy, and when you're wealthy, you tend to want to protect your wealth, and given liberal ideology gears more towards wealth redistribution, it makes sense that those who want to protect there assets will lose their interest in liberalism.
Young people vote Liberal? 🤔
