it seems pretty dumb to me that they are going to build the Western Sydney Airport without a rail link for the first 5 or so years.

Not sure what airlines are going to use the new runways, but it will be a nightmare to get out there for all but those who live in the south west.

If they were smart they would build a high speed dedicated line that splits to CBD, Hurstville, Parramatta and Chatswood.

They should take serious look at Hong Kong's set up. There you can check-in at their Central Station (There are actually 6 locations on HK Island and Kowloon that you can drop off your bags), leave your bags with the airline, and then go get lunch or do some shopping. When it's time to leave, you jump on the airport express and zip @ 130km/h out to the airport. With no bags to worry about, you then just need to clear immigration and jump on your plane.

My first thought as well but I assume its not affordable at this stage, it surely can be the only logical reason.

Current options being considered.

I reckon out of all those options, the only one that'll end up happening will be Option 1, the rail link to Leppington... and it won't be done until 2050, and due to an engineering f**k up, the tracks will be half a foot closer together than all the other lines so a new fleet of trains will be needed to service it will go no further than Leppington.... On the plus side, it will be delivered under it's 3.8 trillion dollar budget....

They should do
(1) - surely a link between the two airports is necessary if there is the possibilityof connecting flights being at different airports ... mind you it would probably be a 50+ min trip
(4 or 5) - western line hookup would link a large number of the sydney population

Well on the plus side the 2050 timeline will probably come in a decade or 2 ahead of the actual completion date of the airport

The rail study offers no date for rail access to the WSA. The capacity of the new WSA will increase gradually and rail access will be provided about the time that it's gridlock out there. Kinda like how they open a 4 lane freeway and expand it to 6 lanes only after people endure the shit fight for way too many f**king years.

This is from the discussion paper from the ^^ link.

They'd be very silly not to have already put away money (or be lining up a private public partnership deal) for the rail connection through Leppington (1) to be operational in time for the airport's opening.

And then connecting it as a loop to Blacktown (4) by 2050?
