Gronk, from what I've heard from people I know who have had chickens in suburbia, vermin is the biggest issue.
Rat's and mice are attracted to chicken coups apparently, and then start inhabiting the house.
Another problem, although it may not be an issue where you are, is that snakes are also attracted. they love the eggs. More a problem where I live.
I've considered it, the kids wanted them as well, but the Mrs was dead against the possibility of the above two problems occurring.
Therefore, we just went with the vegie garden.

I never noticed any rat/mice issues with my neighbours chooks .... and i dont think i remembered any real smell ... but maybe my neighbours took care of all that???

I have relos who live in bushland on the outskirts of melbourne - they have chooks and the snakes are apparently an issue ..... AND apparently a wedged tail eagle swooped in and took their rooster one day

Re: foxes ... i certainly dont live in a bushy location - you'd be surprised how mzny of those little merkins roam alot of sydney

I read somewhere there are plenty more foxes in suburbia than there are in the bush. I have seen a couple walking around Parra near the club early in the morning.

Not my go but the women of my house want a veggie garden and some chooks. FFS.

My council says:-
  1. The keeping of chickens must not create a nuisance or danger to health including but not limited to vermin, odour or noise.
  2. The keeping of chickens must be kept clean and free from offensive odours at all times.
  3. The chicken coup must be enclosed to prevent poultry escaping.
  4. The floors of the chicken coup must be paved with concrete or mineral asphalt underneath the roosts or perches. This waste water must not enter the stormwater system and must be appropriately disposed of to sewer.
  5. Chicken feed should be stored in sealed metal containers and scraps should not be left in the yard so as to attract vermin.
  6. Maximum height of 3 meters above ground level (existing).
  7. Be located in the rear yard.
  8. Not house more than 10 chickens.
  9. Must be structurally adequate.
  10. Limit of one coup per property.
  11. Requires a distance from the boundary of 3 meters.
  12. Materials used must blend with the environment and be non-reflective.

When they stop laying and you've just got chooks and no eggs it all becomes so much more effort. I had them for the eggs. They weren't members of the family. If I wanted to do things for no return I'd get married again.
