Oh, and on the Trump thing (just for something different).

With everything that is happening it is very clear that Trump is focusing internally and on delivering some of his core comittments (which granted some of us find scary). He doesn't give a shit about anything we might have done for them in the past.

Time to cut the umbilical cord and the extent of our reliance on the US as they won't be a predictable partner going forward.

Whilst he has been very publicly circumspect, I suspect Turnbull would have gotten this very clearly during Trump's spray last weekend.

I hope we try and forge a new path on the world stage. This could become a defining moment for us and for Turnbull's leadership.
I must say .... that refugee deal was always dodgy as .... Obama was clearly squeezing it in his last bit in office and leaving it for Trump to then have to deal with, knowing his policies would make it a big thing ... it was an obvious time bomb waiting to go off ... I put as much blame with Obama as Trump - infact I don't blame Trump saying its bad for them, why do they want someone else's problem?

No.... but by the same token I wasn't expecting him to be pitted against a guy who looks like he's more familiar with Lord of the Rings than Boxing Rings....
that merkin would probably belt the living f**k out of all of us ..... he might not look much chop, but maybe he can give a few

The phone call was all about ego. Trump didn't like Turnbull telling him stiff shit you have to wear it.

After all as was pointed out yesterday, we have bent over backwards for them. Quid pro quo.

The US will begin flying its deadliest fighter plane, the F-22 Raptor, out of northern Australia next year, the most senior American commander in the Pacific has revealed as he warned of a need to show strength to deter aggression in the region.

During a visit to Sydney on Wednesday, the commander of the US Pacific Command, Admiral Harry Harris, vowed the US would remain a major player in the region, saying its "enduring interests" would not "change on January 20th" - referring to the day of Donald Trump's inauguration as President.

Yeah. It sounds like Turnbull was fairly firm in return.

I find it funny how he was criticised earlier for not being vocal enough and is now being criticised for not managing the relationship properly.

I don't think he has done anything wrong.

Trump's reaction is understandable given his position.

Its clear that he probably feels that he needs to honour what he knows is a time bomb and is trying to get enough outrage in the public domain so if it does go through he can say that his hands were tied.

Both sides of US politics using people in need as a political play thing...pretty ugly really.

I think we need to look at the timing of the announcement and look beyond the notion that this was a deal struck by Obama on his way out the door. Deals like this are not done on a whim and take months to nut out. It's good for both sides as it gets rid of a massive boil on our bums, gives us huge northern defence capability and for the US gives them strike capability to Asia (the Philippines new leader is a lunatic so the future of that base is not guaranteed).

The White House have now agreed to honour the deal between Obama and Prime Minister "Trunbull"

http://www.smh.com.au/federal-polit...-prime-minister-trunbull-20170202-gu4hj2.html

Following a day of embarrassing revelations about US President Donald Trump's phone conversation with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, the White House has said it will honour the refugee deal.

But in a further insult to Turnbull, White House press secretary Sean Spicer repeatedly mispronounced the Australian Prime Minister's name as "Trunbull".

LOL

Don't disagree that it would have been months in the making.

I personally think that the thought that Trump may have to honour the deal would have crossed their mind at some point. Might have meant that it got pushed through with a little more pace late last year than it otherwise might have.
