If it isn't performing and Government can't fix it then any asset (power, rail, road, port, water, semen etc) will be privatised quicker than you can say "where did my side mirror go?".
But how is it judged to be not performing? If the opinion polls are down you need a boost. This government can't fix it? Cya later. Doesn't this just make the rich richer?

And my camera arrived. I'm gonna fix those merkins, which I suppose is an argument in favour of privatization.

Don't assume that privatisation is always politically acceptable. It aint.

No but the work still needs to be done so they just employ more people. Labour would be the biggest cost blowout compared to the private sector.

The benefits all go to useless merkins clinging to jobs that pay more than they deserve.

You're assuming it would even turn a profit. It's government, so their job is to stick to a budget. But here's the kicker - if they ever manage to get under budget they have their budget reduced the next financial year, which means all these useless merkins have to do more with less. None of them want that so they find ways to spend every dollar they are allocated and hope they don't accidentally go over by too much.
It doesn't even have to turn a profit. It just has to be in the ballpark. The alternative is that the rich get richer. And if that happens we're all paying higher taxes anyway so the savings are irrelevant.

There's nothing wrong with the rich getting richer if they're creating jobs. Plus governments can't afford to pay a decent pension these days, and the average punter only invests in superannuation - which means wealthy corporations. You better hope they're getting richer.

There's nothing wrong with concentrating more of our wealth in fewer individuals? Were they screened for the benevolence gene? And if governments can't afford to pay a decent pension these days maybe it's got something to do with having sold everything off.

I just see everyone complaining about the status quo and then when the situation has changed irreversibly it seems like a case of better the devil you know.

You know the whole world gets richer all the time, right? Even the poorest people have more stuff than they used to.

No it's due to ageing populations - more welfare recipients every year, and correspondingly fewer taxpayers to look after them.

So what? How is that an argument for concentrating wealth?

And people living longer would present the same problems to private industry as it does currently. And if they don't take care of it we'll be forced to. Nothing changes except a bunch of merkins got rich at our expense.

Because it benefits everyone. Most 'wealth' is arbitrary numbers created because a thing (goods or services) was invented that somebody was able to pay a lot of money for. Without money concentrated in the hands of few, there is plenty of stuff that wouldn't exist, and consequently plenty of people without jobs. The only thing worse than being exploited by capitalism is not being exploited by capitalism. That is the state where you find yourself unable to help make things that other merkins want to buy.

Would it be better if we were happy with nothing? Sure. But few people are, other than hindyeleven.

I don't really see it as at anyone's expense. If we were alive five thousand years ago we would still be working hard just to survive, only we would have a lot less stuff. I'm doing ok financially (I would prefer to be doing better, because I'm a greedy, jealous merkin) but I recognise that I am doing well precisely because I have helped make some wealthier merkins even wealthier.

Would you rather live in a world where there were no yachts, mansions or overseas holidays with $20k/night prostitutes, if it meant you had less yourself? I would see that attitude as petulant.

I'm not convinced it's as clear cut as you suggest. If it was we'd have privatised everything long ago and we'd all be loaded. But that aside, wealth is also power, so by making the rich richer comparatively means the average Joe is less powerful and more reliant on the rich guys playing by the book. But keep the high priced hookers, I don't want Bernie to go off the rails just yet.

I agree power is zero sum, but merkins need to let go. People power only works when you’re in the majority (or a politically useful minority).

As for why privatisation of everything is taking so long, it’s because most people resist privatisation. Governments can only sell it where there is a clear benefit.

I need some advice, ladies and gents.

My internet has been down since a week before Christmas.

My ISP sent a technician, and that technician said I needed to call and electrician to fix the cables.

I called the electrician, and they tested all cables - the cables are ok.

Rang the ISP again, they sent another technician, and this technician said it was a Telstra fault (but I had to show them the report from the electrician to prove it).

My ISP said they cannot make any promises, because it's a Telstra issue, but nothing has been done.

I set both Telstra and my ISP a deadline to get it fixed today by 5pm, or I am making an official complaint with the ombudsman. I received no response.

My question is - I'm not a Telstra customer. Can I call hem directly to get the merkins to fix the MDF?

Could a sparky fox the MDF? I've been told it's a Telstra issue, so only Telstra can fix it, but Telstra are f**ked.
