Physical disabilities have pretty clear cut causes, as well as effects. Mental illness has always been a massive bag of worms, and the bag is growing at an exponential rate.

It's still a thing though. And if making a few allowances stops some kids killing themselves then great. I don't think that bag will grow forever either, maybe just until it's about the right size.

It's a very tough situation for any person and family to be in.
I heard stats last week that up to 20% of LGBT people attempt to take there own lives.
Up to 50% of transgender people attempt suicide. Just terrible figures.

How will we know if it stops kids killing themselves though? The statistics are all junk social science. There is no control or reproducibility. Merkins can't even agree on the current statistics.

When society is seen to be the cause of a physical illness or disability we generally take drastic steps to change society. But what about when society causes mental illness/disability? Surely treating a mental illness like gender dysmorphia with irreversible surgery isn't a foolproof way to reduce suicide in children.

If someone identifies as lgbt then it gives you a fair idea. But why not just look at the overall suicide rate? And I'm not talking about getting kids surgery, just a separate bathroom or whatever.

Non LGBT kids are at risk as well, however at a much lower rate
Aboriginal and Torres Strait kids are an even higher risk. Suicides are not related to bullying however. Amy Everett was recently in the news. As was Stuart Kelly of course and the Stay Kind Cup.

There is no single main cause. Mental illness is unbelievably varied and complex.

You often find that surprisingly small triggers exist in surprisingly large numbers, because for someone who is fighting what feels like a losing battle every day that one small thing can simply be the thing that breaks the dam

Well, if you consider then number of disabled parking permits issued, there couldn't be any more than a dozen people in NSW that are not disabled.

Some disabled people don't have arms, by the way.
