It's pretty simple, but we'll see how long it takes me to explain it, because there are definite pitfalls. And with hindsight I would have done it slightly differently.
Basically, because there are dozens of bookmakers, and their odds will vary, you can often make bets on an event where you cover all outcomes, and are guaranteed a profit (or at least no loss) no matter what outcome occurs. Also, many sites will have promotional offers, such as cash back if you lose, or money back if a team finishes within x many points of the winner, that allows you to back all outcomes profitably. The promotional offers is where you will make the easy money.
For eg, Sportsbet have a deal on the AFL lately where you get your bet refunded up to $100 if your team lead at any break but lost. This occurred twice yesterday - Collingwood vs Richmond and Brisbane vs Port Adelaide. And disregarding the cash-back thing for a minute, both outcomes could already be covered with different bookies for a very small win either way. But when you take the offer into account, things get a lot better. An outlay of $190 on the Richmond game (100 on Collingwood at $1.92, $90 on Richmond at $2.20) would have returned $298. If Richmond had won, it would have been $198, and if Collingwood had won it would have been $192. So a $2 profit, an $8 profit, or a $108 profit. Similar story with the other game.
Oddcshecker.com.au and oddsportal.com will let you see the prices of many bookies. It's not always up to date but is very handy.
And before you join a site, scour google and the site for sign-up bonuses and promotional codes. Only deposit enough to get the max bonus possible, because at least with Aussie sites you have to bet whatever you've deposited before you can withdraw it. Also remember, if the draw is offered as an outcome, you have to cover that (2 NRL games went to golden point this week I think).
The sign-up bonuses can be hundreds of dollars, but usually need to be turned over several times. But this can easily be done if you keep an eye out for favourable odds. Even making a very small loss on a bet can be worth it to get the bonus, as they usually have time limits.
