It sucks that housing is expensive and I worry about how my kids will pay rent, pay HECS and save for a deposit.

This is where creative parents need to help out I think.

I have and will only have 1 kid so I can give her everything. I hated being poor growing up and I don't want my daughter to grow up that way.

We are close friends with ex City Of London Merchant bankers and the whole history of US Fed notes coming on-shore here is 100% factual. We knew all about this scam back in the late 1990's. Anyway we are not here to argue. Do your homework like we have.

If homework involves reading all that crap you've been posting, then I'll just stay ignorant thanks.

Except a sibling. :sarcasm:

 good point.

Funnily enough on the rare occasions she asks I tell her that we would have to move into a much smaller house and she would get nothing and I'd sell all her stuff, she quickly tells me she doesn't want a sibling.

Although it was also our choice originally, medical reasons removed the option for my wife and i to have a second child.
Our 8 year old daughter gets a similar response when she asks about siblings and we get the same reaction.

While this is one possible explanation of the price spike in the late 1980s, it has no ability to explain the effective doubling of real prices between 1999 and today.

God love those doubling of prices. :D

Suity

My house has almost doubled in 3 and a bit years. I'm not too upset about it to be honest.

If only my wife would let me sell and we buy a house near Newcastle almost outright and live mortgage free. I can do my job from the office in Newcastle.......that would be my dream.......one day.

As explained in our big post, from 1996/97 to 2005 many Australians had $$$$ to buy/compete in real estate, the first home buying scheme being a major contributor as was fast easy credit/loans available from all banks, etc..... Doubling of prices had nothing to do with the 1980's. Read again.... :D

You don't think the introduction of concessional capital gains tax on investment properties in the late 90s, and the reduction in personal income tax rates accompanying the introduction of the GST had anything to do with it?

Yep, ours has too. I'm not complaining, although everything is relative. Selling a rental property recently has also helped. That doubled as well in the past 3 years.

I'm glad my parents didn't stop at one.
I'm the second child.

They could have stopped at two though dammit!

I just had one of those Pizza Hut pizzas with the meat pies in the crust.
Pretty safe to say I won't be having it ever again.

Remember not too long ago there we "economists" that were spruking the line that you'd be better off renting all your life than owning a house ?

Wonder what they say now ?
