No need to do that if you purchase an extended new car warranty around the time of purchasing the new or as new car.

Up to 2005 we were buying all our extended new car warranties from Esanda via a broker operating out of Peter Warren (Ford or whatever) @ Warwick Farm - always done over the phone.

One example of many.

I purchased a 99 Subaru Outback Limited series that was 3 months old with 12k on the meter (saved almost $20k vs new car - let someone else pay the outrageous stamp duty etc). When the new car warranty ran out 3 years or so later the auto transmission failed and we took it to a bloke we knew at Botany/Waterloo on Botany Road who quoted around $4k to overhaul/recondition it. Going new was mega mega expensive.

Fortunately the Esanda extended car warranty covered all costs and it still works today.

The reason why we've never serviced any auto transmission on any car since is because the Botany Road bloke told me to never use cruise control because they wreck the auto transmission and to regularly check the oil and replace/clean it when required. Ever since, we've never used cruise control.

Now waiting for "Tweezer-Dick" to post another crass comment.............

Mate, cruise control does nothing bad to a transmission. In fact, it should remove moronic driving behaviour of the dick behind the wheel. If you service the tranny at manufacturers intervals and don't drive like an idiot the tranny should last like any other component.

I'm really concerned about your relationship with the tranny.

Mate.. agree with the service, tightening belts, changing oils, but to us that's as far as it goes. Going up and down hills, around bends and engaging slow cars and traffic, cruise control's constant pulling to and fro, stopping and starting, jumping up and down gears, etc, etc, creates enormous unnecessary wear and tear that eventually leads to massive repair bills. Ever since we stopped using the cruise control while maintaining service procedures, we've never had another auto transmission issue, therefore none of these $3.5 to $5k + bills coming in either. :D The bloke who advised us was a 20 years + specialist with auto transmissions.

i have been wondering if there would be any increase in fuel economy if you drove around with cruise control on all the time

What a crock, but if you're happy then that's all that matters.

Do people seriously use cruise control in that manner though? Not having a go, just asking the question... I only use the cruise control if I'm on the freeway/motorway and I don't expect to be slowing down or stopping regularly. I use it especially around the holiday periods when I hit the open road to make sure I don't get stung for double demerits!

I don't know a lot about cars but using cruise control when you're likely to be going up inclines and round bends and when conditions/traffic dictate the need to slow down regularly would seem pointless and more a hindrance than any sort of benefit...

My car is about 170,000 km and I always use cruise control

I have had no issues at all with my car however I don't service it at the dealers but a honest mechanic

Over had issues with previous cars with maintenance at dealerships. They don't fix anything unless it is blatantly obvious. They wait until warranty expires them hit u.

With all this cap price servicing, that's the only way they'll make money

I use it when I know there are speed cameras around, 40 zones or coppers

Cruise control is only effective on the freeway. It certainly improves fuel economy but is worthless around town. I have never seen it work on a car under 60kph.

I agree with the point about an honest mechanic. Nothing is more valuable. I always when I purchase a car opt for extended factory warranty that is transferable to the new owner. Very good for piece of mind and resale.

I'm due to change the family car at years end. I usually buy Japanese but I have looked at the Hyundai Santa Fe. My wife hated the interior. Told me it looked and felt cheap. I'd buy the Kluger tomorrow but it doesn't come in a diesel. Waiting for the new Mazda CX-9. Looked at the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Love the look of them but have heard too many horror stories about them. I want to keep the next car for 5 years.

I looked at the Honda HRV recently (small SUV) - it was actually kinda cool ... very roomy for a small SUV - but felt a bit all over the place searching for gears when driving

but I dunno if I want something like that .... considering a mazda 6 wagon instead - although I hate the look of that bloody screen sitting on the dash - it looks like someone blue-tacked their tablet to the dashboard

It's just a changed habit we got into and its been working for us since around 2002. We don't miss using cruise control and we don't get speeding tickets either. Not keen on auto transmissions packing it in and besides a new engine or a complete engine overhaul, rebuilding auto transmissions maybe the next expensive cab in the rank one pays for repairing automatics.

Generally open stretched out highways is the go with cruise control but it seems many use it on the M5, M7, etc, even on Victoria & Parramatta Roads. Each to their own.

That's the key and fortunately we have a good-hearted family out here in Bowral looking after the three cars and trailer.

We have a Kluger mate.
I absolutely love it!! f**k diesel.
In saying that, I'm probably just about to buy a diesel.

I love my Deisel GQ but also just got a 2015 Outback and it's amazing.
We compared the Outback and the Kluger and the Outback worked out as way more bang for our buck, sweetest car I've ever driven.
It's also got these crazy cameras either side of the rear view mirror that sense the movement of the traffic around you. You can set the cruise control to 60 around town and it will speed up and slow down with the traffic.

It's the lowest and usually the largest pulley on the front of your engine. It bolts to the crankshaft and has a belt running on it. What model car do you have?

Thanks. It's a Mercedes ML280 cdi. I struck a deal with the service manager and he's not charging for labour. I thought this was reasonable considering the engine block was already dismantled because of their f**k up.

My car has cruise control and a limiter. Meaning that you dial up the max speed and the car will not exceed it even if you're going down hill. Having said that I got booked outside Alliance Stadium last week (61 in 50km zone) cos I forgot to turn it on.

Mine is diesel. Twin turbo I think. Goes good. Long legs on the freeway and nippy for a tank. I get under 10l/100km on average.
