rleague said:Major Preliminary Semi-Final (Loser to Minor Semi-Final; Winner to Major Semi-Final)
Norths Devils v Easts Tigers
Sun August 29, Bishop Park, 3:00pm
Norths: Quentin Laulu-Togagae, Chad Leach, Marc Brentnall, Jake Webster, Derek Fletcher, Brent Mulholland, Andrew McFadden, Robert Tanielu, Marty Turner, Pat Gardner, Anthony Boyd, Aaron Bulow, Andrew Hamilton (c). Int: Trent Henrick, Nathan Turner, Antonio Kaufusi
Easts: Jason Barsley, Steve Beattie, Steve Renouf, Wade Liddell, Michael Pearce, Isaac Kaufmann, Dane Campbell, Scott Sipple, Trent Young, Scott Alo, Darren Smith (c), Matt Lockyer, Dallas McIlwain. Int: Charlie Tonga, Leigh Coghill, Trevor Exton, Paul Dezolt
Referee: Michael Inman
Head to Head: Played 19, Easts 10, Drawn 1, Norths 8
Encounters this Year: 24-all at Langlands Park, Norths 42 d Easts 32 at Bishop Park
Prediction: Easts by 4. The winner of this clash will face Burleigh at Pizzey Park the following weekend for the chance of a spot in the grand final. All will be not lost for the loser of this match, as they will face the winner of the Toowoomba-Wynnum match at home in an elimination semi final.
Given that these two teams fought out a draw at Langlands Park a few weeks ago, this should be another hard-fought encounter with a more at stake. The Devils got the better of the Tigers the last time the two clashed at this venue.
Norths have done very well to finish second considering they havent fielded their strongest team on the park at any stage of the season. Led capably by old hands like Andrew Hamilton and Andrew McFadden, the youth of the Devils have certainly stood up to be counted so far. The test will come though in the semi finals and it starts up against a very strong opponent.
Easts have certainly improved tenfold from last years disappointing season and are one of the favourites to take out this years premiership. The additions of Darren Smith and the likes of Dane Campbell and Isaac Kaufmann (both who struggled to break into the top grade of their previous clubs) and, to a lesser extent, Steve Renouf have paid dividends for the Tigers. They are the best attacking team in the competition and can defend capably at times although they would be keen to improve even more in this area.
Should be an enthralling contest and I slightly lean towards Easts because of their stronger team on paper. Certainly well worth the time and effort to get out to Bishop Park on Sunday to watch this game live.
Minor Semi-Final (Loser eliminated; Winner to Preliminary Final)
Norths Devils v Wynnum Seagulls
Sun September 5, Bishop Park, 3:00pm
Norths: Greg Inglis, Chad Leach, Marc Brentnall, Jake Webster, Derek Fletcher, Brent Mulholland, Andrew McFadden, Robert Tanielu, Marty Turner, Pat Gardner, Anthony Boyd, Aaron Bulow, Andrew Hamilton (c). Int: Quentin Laulu-Togagae, Nathan Turner, Antonio Kaufusi, Jeremy Smith
Wynnum: Jim Ahmat, Simon Phillips, Greg Bourke, Ricky Taylor, Michael Anschau, Luke Dalziel-Don, Damien Quinn (c), Grant Wooden, Royce Simms, Cameron Durnford, Gary Winter, Damien Durnford, John Bruce. Int: Justin Dennien, Wade Bachmann, John Shillington, Justin Hoggart
Referee: Justin Eastwood
Head to Head: Played 16, Norths 8, Drawn 2, Wynnum 6
Encounters this Year: Wynnum 34 d Norths 32 at Kougari Oval, Norths 40 d Wynnum 14 at Bishop Park
Prediction: Norths by 6. This will be the final match of the season for one team and other remains in the hunt for the premiership. You could say both teams were not at their best last week with Wynnum were extremely lucky to get out of jail against Toowoomba while the Devils fumbled and bumbled their way to a loss to Easts. But, both get another chance to put their title credentials forward with the winner moving into the preliminary final to face either Burleigh or Easts.
A focus on ball control will be the key for both teams in winning this game. Norths frittered away vital possession against Easts and virtually gave themselves no chance of winning the game. Meanwhile, the Seagulls, who looked dangerous when they had the ball, completed only around 50-60 % of their sets against the Clydesdales. Wynnum will also have to improve their defence that was lacking several times against Toowoomba because the Devils are a strong attacking team.
I tip Norths to get up to here and progress to the preliminary final
