Now that he has shaved

He needs to pull his head in, put his nose to the wheel and work at his game. Most of all though, if he grows another beard, he needs to not refer to it in the third person. That's the stuff of dickheads.

BAHAHHA amen. I am a massive dave defender but that is true like woah. that column he wrote as his own beard made me want to die.

in fairness to him he had a fantastic year last year and was one of the best wingers in the comp and deserved his test spot

this year is a different matter but he isn't the first player to suffer 2nd year syndrome plus he has been battling a shoulder injury - kinda restricts his aggressive style that made him so good last year.

i am sure he will bounce back next year when the shoulder are right and manly have the hungar again

The beard and moustache couldn't agree on the colour iirc.

The thing that's very tough to remember is he has around 35 NRL games under his belt. How many players with that experience get thrust onto the big stage? Is it right to put a kid with so little experience in origin?

yep exactly. i really don't think it's his fault.

It became his fault when he made the conscious decision to grow a gimmick on his face and play up to the media about it to get attention.

He manufactured a "character" for himself, and based on that character got his name in the spotlight and on Oz and NSW team sheets.

He is as much to blame as anyone

I lost respect for him as he continues to talk to the beard in 3rd person. Nothing wrong with a bit of fun, but you'd think after a few shockers he'd want to knuckle down and prove something but nah..

Really can't believe how Bellamy tolerated him in the camp, especially game 2. Came in with the pink stuff (yes it was for a worthy cause) but spent the majority of the camp discussing what colour he was going to dye it before the game. Haha oooh the mystery! What will it be?

And of course it's not his fault being picked in these teams. All i'm saying he is average and is lucky to have played in teams he didn't deserve to be picked in.

PS. Taniela is not a bad looking bloke..

LOL lord forbid someone to have "character". If you can't see the player behind the beard then thats your problem, I don't care if a guy has a bit of fun with his game as long as he sets a fair example and he does. There aren't enough players that are like that in our game. Talking to the beard went a bit far but at least he isn't glassing women or taking drugs.

He was a rookie who has had a quiet year this year but he will be the first one to tell you that. I think he is still a potentially good rep winger.

Remember when the Broncos supporters thought Denan Kemp was the better winger and should have made the OZ squad last year? LOL now that is funny

I don't know the guy personally so I don't know how much he knuckles down on game day or at training but outside of that who cares? I don't

I agree though that his brother John is just as good and has had a better year. His brother started the year in QLD Cup too so he really has had a good year.

David is having one of those years where everything that was once easy to him is just that bit more difficult. Every player goes through that it is how they come out the other side that matters.

In the words of a Rugby League Legend "If you want to be a big noise, you've got to aim up"

Yes, that RL Legend was Tommy.

I won't lie...I'd have Dave back in a heartbeat. He's always been a very talented player, he may be in a fair old slump at the moment but he's a very good fullback/centre and I still regret (in that way only a fan can) that we let him go.

He milked that stupid beard for all it was worth. Look I've never met the bloke and can't comment on his character, I mean hey he's probably a nice guy but what annoys me is him whoring himself out in the media at every possible chance and gimmicking himself instead of concentrating on his football. He made a mockery of origin 2 camp with his coloured beard and it was no surprise he played like a busted. If he's willing to dye his beard pink, pose nude for calenders, talk about his beard, do gigs on the footy show, well he's clearly putting himself in the spotlight and if you're in the spotlight you have to be prepared to cop criticism when you stuff up.

Kiki, I love ya girl but why do you have to defend Dave's character in every thread, FFS we're not having a go at his character, people here bag him out when he plays like an arse. I don't care if he's a nice guy, we're here to discuss what he does on the field.

Nice guy or not, no one can deny he's possibly the worst player to play origin, and i don't care if its not his fault because he doesn't pick himself, he was there and he played rubbish so therefore he deserves criticism

That's way too harsh IMO...but anyway

He didn't manufacture the gimmick. He grew a beard and was given the gimmick by the media. Do we think he rang Voss and asked him to refer to him as the Wolfman ? I dont think so. Once it was created he was advised to milk it by his peers, and i'm guessing his management, for the marketing opportunities it could create for him. You need to look at the bigger picture. Dave Williams is on a minimum NRL wage. He is not holed up in a North Shore mansion with a ferrari in a 4 car garage. Financially, going along or milking the wolfman ride was the smart thing for him to do.

"He grew the beard and was given the gimmick by the media"

My God, are you that delusional?

No beard = no gimmick. Most players who grow a beard do so for the gimmick quality - Reynoldson, Meyers, Williams et al.

Additionally, the excess media he gives himself (primarily through the Footy Show) says volumes about who is more passionate about the promotion of him - and that's David himself.

Really. When i was in my late teens, early twenties i tried the crewcut, the fro, the goatee, couldn't manage a full beard but if i could i would have gone there too. I did it because young people tend to experiment with their looks, not because i wanted a gimmick. I think your basing the reason he grew it on an assumption. Im basing the reason on being good friends with one of his close mates and a conversation on how the "wolfman" came to being. I suppose he could be delusional.

I think the excess media says volumes about his manager and the need to supplement his income. Yes, he could always say no. Whether it is financially smart for him to say "no" is another story entirely.

I have no problems with him being a gimmick. I have few qualms with him trying to make money out of it. The issue is him being paraded as a top-level footballer, he's not one - representing Australia and NSW with his level of ability is embarrassing IMO, and it's a result of his gimmick, manufactured or not.
