NRL 2017 TV RATINGS!

Not sure how many times it has to be said, the majority of fox league subscribers come from Sydney, simulcast games have gone up 30%+ on last year alone. The NRL isn't losing eyeballs in Sydney, Nine is, to fox.

Nine may get ~200k in Sydney, and fox may get another ~100-150k in Sydney, whereas before simulcasting Nine would have got the whole 300-350k in Sydney.

Just out of interest because I haven't seen the numbers but how do fox subscriber numbers compare in Brisbane and Melbourne to Sydney right now?

Also how does the drop in Sydney ratings compare specifically to the increase in Foxtel subscribers? I haven't got the exact figures at hand so obviously I'm just playing from memory.

I'm just not sure I buy this argument. Sydney isn't a unique anomaly when it comes to fox. Brisbane and Melbourne ratings don't seem to have taken the same hit from fox that Sydney has.

Brisbane ratings haven't taken the same hit as Sydney because Fox doesn't have as high a penetration in Brisbane, because the Broncos have always been on FTA, which is why, by Foxsports own admission, they are trying to improve in Brisbane by introducing Qlders only etc. Sydney has always had the highest penetration for foxsports, and that was built upon rugby league. Ask yourself, if you are in Sydney & paying for fox why would you continue to watch Nine's coverage now that fox simulcast games? No one would. So right off the bat Nine lose the majority of Foxsports subscribers in Sydney. Nine will also continue to lose eyeballs as more people subscribe to foxsports for FoxLeague.

By example, in 2015, the last season before fox started simulcasting, the highest rating regular season game in Sydney was Bulldogs vs Eels with 472k. Last year the corresponding game rated 317k on Nine in Sydney and 212k on foxsports. Now isn't it safe to assume that in the city with the highest penetration for foxsports, built on rugby league, that of that 212k watching two Sydney clubs on foxsports, the majority were in Sydney and were watching on Nine in 2015?

You only have to look at the total ratings for each round and compare them with the previous year, the difference is negligible. The same number of people are watching NRL, they are just doing it on different platforms.

According to this article in the AFR it would appear that we still own most of our digital media. So our Broadcast deal may not have been as bad as we first thought.

"Mr Greenberg said rugby league would look to build up its reserves during the pending broadcast rights cycle from 2018 onwards, in which the league will receive a record $1.9 billion from Nine Entertainment Co, Fox Sports and Telstra.

But the NRL will build its own digital media business under chief digital officer Rebekah Horne, formerly of Network Ten, rather than having its websites and apps run by Telstra as is currently the case.

"We think it is a better way for us to engage with our fans...and we need to be ready with new apps and the like by January 1, 2018," Mr Greenberg said."

Here is the Financial review article mentioned above by Tri colours.
Please note Perth red the figures which says NRL got 1.9 billion cash over 5 years Plus add 92 to 100 million from Sky NZ so updated years figures for 2018 - 2022 = $400 million dollars yearly. As pointed before no contra with the NRL while AFL had 200ml in contra. So we NRL are number one 1 cash/media in Australia. Or biggest media deal in Australian sport is NRL NRL NRL NRL NRL and anybody that says otherwise is a Gafl.

The National Rugby League has ditched its $54.6 million future fund to help alleviate short-term cashflow issues and pay for a big investment in a new digital media business, the sport's 2016 accounts reveal.

Rugby league's "Sustainability Fund", established by the independent Australian Rugby League Commission ruling body in 2014, has been liquidated.

The fund was to have been overseen by a committee headed by ARLC member and prominent businessman Graeme Samuel and CSR chairman Jeremy Sutcliffe. However, both will step down from the commission later this month and the fund is now part of the NRL's cash reserves.

The league had targeted the fund to reach at least $80 million by the end of 2017. Its conservative investment philosophy for the money included having about 70 per cent invested in fixed-interest or cash, another 20 per cent in Australian equities and 10 per cent in international stocks. The benchmark expected to be achieved was annual CPI plus 3 per cent, with its managers Evans & Partners and JANA achieving a 5.4 per cent return in 2015.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg told The Australian Financial Review the money was needed to help establish a digital media business that will cost $20 million annually for five years from 2018 and help get the league through 2017.

"It is partly the digital spend and partly for our cashflow, for distribution to our clubs and for us."

The NRL is also receiving $50 million upfront from broadcaster Nine Entertainment Co in 2017, brought forward from the next rights deal and has negotiated an expensive funding deal with clubs that will see the 16 sides paid up to 130 per cent of the player salary cap from next year onwards.

Mr Greenberg said rugby league would look to build up its reserves during the pending broadcast rights cycle from 2018 onwards, in which the league will receive a record $1.9 billion from Nine Entertainment Co, Fox Sports and Telstra.

But the NRL will build its own digital media business under chief digital officer Rebekah Horne, formerly of Network Ten, rather than having its websites and apps run by Telstra as is currently the case.

"We think it is a better way for us to engage with our fans...and we need to be ready with new apps and the like by January 1, 2018," Mr Greenberg said.

The NRL revealed in 2016 that it made a small loss of $2.6 million for the year to October 31, 2016 from revenue of $350.5 million, compared to a $8.1 million loss from $334 million revenue in 2015.

Much of the revenue increase was from commercial income, including a big new sponsorship deal with Sportsbet.

The clubs and state bodies under the ARLC's control, including the Newcastle Knights and Gold Coast Titans, made a combined loss of $4.3 million for the year.

So what exactly will the digital business be doing ?

Will it build the NRL app and stream all games for $12 / month ??? Hasnt the exclusive mobile rights been locked up by telstra for 5 years ? so if telstra own the digital rights, why is the NRL paying to procduce the app and platform..

You dont sell your tv rights to Fox, then go buy tv cameras, and commentators ...

Or is the digital depsrtment just going to operate nrl.com.au .. ? like every other business does , ie run their own website..

I'm not sure, but if the NRL are doing the job that Telstra formally did then they would be getting all the profits .

Digital TV is the future and I guess the NRL want to control their own fate in that respect. They will probably make more money in the long run with their own streaming service and selling it to the highest bidder. There maybe more opportunity to sell it internationally as well.

Seven are now combining 7mate ratings with primary channel ratings in top20 oztam reports so AFL appears higher up the rankings, while Gem ratings aren't for NRL.

AFL STV ratings down -24% on same time last year. Round 1 last year had 6 games rate above 200k on fox, this year they only had 2. They also had 3/4 expansion sides in the Swans, lions & suns rating for a combined total of only 174k on fox.

This is a smart move by 7 Network, Nine has every right to do this as well but it seems they are not very interested in doing so at the moment.
