NRL 5/8 rankings

I can't believe people are honestly rating Braith Anasta above John Sutton. Do people actually watch games??

Yes I do. I wasn't a fan of Anasta up until this year, but he has played some great football, but suffered as his side (and in particular his forward pack) capitulated toward the end of the season. Earlier in the season, even though his side was spasmodic, he was playing great.

Watch the 2nd & 3rd Origin games again and see how he went. Behind a pack that was functioning, he played awesome. Johns just stole everyones thunder.

Sutton IMO is a great 5/8 and I rate him highly, he will be even better next year with some miles under his belt.

Yes, it must have been hard for poor old Braith at the end of the season playing behind O'Meley, Mason, Asotasi, Ryan and Grimaldi. I don't think Sutton has ever played behind a good forward pack. Decent one yes, but not in the class of the Dogs.

When I started to hear people saying Braith 'tries hard' I knew thats when he'd lost it. Brad Watts tried hard too.

Those forwards are name players - in form an awesome pack. But for various reasons the pack as a whole were shocking for the majority of the second half of the comp.

Even when he was at Canterbury, Anasta never really impressed me apart from his rookie year. Hes a slow 5/8th which he will be better suited at lock.

Anasta at best is 7th or 8th in league in terms of a 5/8th

Problem is, Braithie doesn't like to tackle very much - which kind of limits his effectiveness as a lock!!

I can't believe people actually think Braith Anasta is a playmaker!! Sure, he throws a good, flat, long-ball to his centres [when he's not throwing it out of bounds on the full], and that's probably the only real strength to his game, the ability to get the ball out wide in a hurry. I've watched plenty of Anasta play, and he just doesn't read the game like the superstars do - he doesn't see the gaps, nor does he have the ability to put players through them.

His form this year was terrible, and as soon as Sherwin went down, the Bulldogs were lucky to score a try each game.

Now, for the guy who says John Morris doesn't have natural talent :?

Have you ever seen him play? He is superb at drawing and passing, putting his outside men into a gap. His years of playing hooker make him a dangerous prospect running at a broken line. And he also has better control over his short kicking game than most of the 5/8's on that original list!

I didnt want to create another thread, but who do people rate as the top 5 defending 5/8ths ?

1. Gidley - 90% Efficient rating and is overall great defender now.
2. Smith
3. Barrett
4. Sutton
5. Wing

Benji will play at 90 kilos in time. He'll be more of a traditional 5/8 when he reaches that size, 90 is not small.

You sure his shoulders could take that extra weight ?

Just becuase the Sharks are sh*t

Doesnt mean Dykes is sh*t

Tell me how 'at top form', Sutton and Morris are better five-eighths than a once Dally M five-eighth.

On form, sure.

But 'at top form', you guys should stop rubbing Bob McCarthys c**k.

If you are talking this years form alone then yeah sure he's been great for the Eels for sure, but in terms of talent, ability and at their best he is a fair bit down the list.

I'd prefer current form then wasted potential

Five eighth to me is the absolute weakest position in the NRL at the moment for mine. Every other position you say oh yeah he's clearly number one, and these blokes are terrific players, five eighth is like the last spot picked - if you have a spare lock/hooker/halfback/centre lying around the club you give him a run in the jersey. There's probably the least most specialised position at the moment.
