NRL 9s

I remember going along to the 7s a few years ago, and frankly thinking there was no chance we would get beaten. From memory we got beat by a non NRL team that year...

That could've been the 1995 7's when the Warriors were beaten by a NZ Residents team?

I have NFI why you'd group the Warriors and NZ Residents in the same pool, but the AUSTRALIAN RL thought it was a brilliant idea

Not real excited about this, as I never like the shorter forms of the real games. I find 7's rugby actually quite boring, the same as 20/20 cricket. Just dumbed down versions of the main game. There is plenty of real league to watch during a season, so I don't need to watch 9's and probably won't.

You've got English Superleague, NRL, local Premier Grade and junior footy. Usually watch a minimum of 2-3 live games a week and 2-3 NRL games on tele. Hardly feel short of footy to watch.

Years ago, went to the RL 7's a paramatta stadium, musta been about 87/88? Then they dropped it. It was pretty boring really. Manly won I think.

I was annoyed that rugby 7's got included in the olympics because its not a real sport. Its a festival game only.

Having said that, hope the tournament is successful, to promote the game amongst non league people and help league in Auckland move ahead.

Each to their own whether you like it or not.

I'm excited for it because I really have little interest in the pre-season since they dropped the Toohey's Challenge and the 9's will be open and fast however will still have enough players to have a decent defensive structure to it.

I'm glad it's in NZ as it gives RL/Warriors/NRL more exposure and therefore more leverage as it becomes more popular

Same. Pre-season doesn't really whet the appetite, this will help satisfy the hunger pains a bit. A lot hinges on how seriously the clubs take it. Pretty sure a lot of people will turn up to watch. It'll be good exposure-wise, but hopefully the drunkards in the crowd don't leave a black eye on the event. So long as NZ Warrior manages to leave his clothes on and stay off the field, it should be all good.

Don't worry, I'll be a well-behaved drunkard. And I'll only charge the field, if I miss JBro with my bazooka.

No this one was about 2003-2004. I remember the likes of Francis Meli, Sione Faumuina, Brent Webb and Ali Lauitiiti were in our team. I think PJ Marsh was captain.

I'm pretty sure that was pre-season 2003, I believe a 17 year old SBW was in the Bulldogs side. I think he was primed to play first grade that year but got injured. I'd totally forgotten that tournament even happened, was it televised? I only remember reading about it in the papers but I didn't even have all of the Sky channels back then.

That sounds right. I went to day 1 at the SFS. I think it may have been a Police team or a Residents team or something that beat us, or went extremely close to beating us. We were horrible. Truly horrible. IIRC Tame Tupou may have been picked up by the Broncos out of that tournament.
