Collingwoods didn't include gaming revenue from pokies. 80,000 members and some big development t grants boosted their revenue last year.

NRL needs to properly wake up to the financial benefits of membership. A club like warriors should be looking at 50,000 members.

last time i read their annual report it, like other afl clubs, included social club revenue, aka leagues club in our language.

Social club and gaming revenue was $22,176,163 for 2013, 30% of their total revenue (p.20).

Agreed el busto, all that money on a national whole of game review and nothing outside of nsw and qland came out of it. Not like we are talking massive sums of money, $3-4mill a year invested wisely could make a major difference across the affiliated states.
I agree mate. I have enough faith in Smith to believe he will ditch those who are just treading water and he has some deadwood about believe me.

Also on "reform" Dave smith has been blustering about the importance of the international game since taking over and the RLWC last year gave us a glimpse of how important a vehicle for developing rl's public awareness and reputation the int game is so wtf is the decision to cancel next years ashes tour about? Here was the ideal opportunity to relaunch the kangaroos brand and put some massive marketing around int RL in prep for the 2018 RLWC. Instead he cancelled it and next year the kangaroos are unlikely to play other than a pointless mid season game against NZ. Sigh.

player driven, Australian players are given a break from end of season rep football once every 4 or so years, it happened once and has now mutated into an expectation.

Crucially, the NRL signed a $1 billion five-year broadcast deal with Nine Entertainment Co and Fox Sports Australia that began in 2013. The cheers around the commission table when it was revealed that the NRL had extracted itself from an opaque “first and last” rights clause for broadcast rights with News are said to have been louder than when the $1 billion deal was announced.

This is the bit i like most....

Could very well be speculation by the journo, but the gist is right; the end of F&L was just as important as the $1Billlion.

Because of this, they dont have an obligation to tell 9 anything, the ARLC can do a closed envelope bid if they like and strategically leak info to make the networks nervous.

God damn, it would be fun to be on that committee negotiating the next deal...

Rebecca Wilson is a complete idiot. But there is a good article in the Telegraph today re NRL reforms. It's about NRL needing a "benevolent dictator".

I totally disagree...

Not to say that they shouldnt have goals and tell their detractors to shove off, but (from a long term perspective) it is far more important to create a strong bureaucracy than give all the power to one or a few people.

The problem with a "benevolent dictator" (even if they are successful in their own time) is that the system naturally falls apart once they leave. But a sovereign bureaucracy (think: Hobbsian Leviathan) creates a structure that is "greater than the sum of its parts"; meaning that, even after DSmith leaves, the structure is intact and someone else can just move into the position without a major upheaval...

Isn't that by Paul Kent?

Wilson wrote crap about how nrl fans are switching off in 'droves' because of wrestling and no punch or shoulder charge and that the NRL wont get close to what they got for last broadcast rights.

She called Smith the invisible man because he appropriately had doyle as head of integrity answer questions about Shane Flanagan and greenberg as head of football answer questions about wrestling and officiating and Paul Kind as head of commercial answer questions about tv ratings.

NRL boss Dave Smith might think about putting his own head up for comment some time soon instead of farming out the bad news to his underlings.

Marketing boss, Paul Kind, was left to defend this week’s terrible television ratings figures. Last week, it was Integrity boss, Jim Doyle who had to put his hand up over the Shane Flanagan return to coaching, and the week before Todd Greenberg was the man defending the indefensible — referees.

Smith has been given a pretty easy time by most of the NRL media but patience is wearing thin with his lack of statesmanship at a time when the game desperately needs it.

She doesn't even know Paul Kinds role, Lewis Pullen is head of marketing, Kind is head of commercial. Media has given Smith an easy time? haha they were gunning for him for more than a year and sections of the telegraph still are.

It's a joke, if the players don't want to represent their country they can withdraw, I'm sure there will be plenty of players who would dream of taking their place. Australia has the depth that if most of the first choice would rather have a holiday that they could be replaced by the next breed of kangaroos and still provide strong competition for the lions.

Could you imagine the aru or nzru saying we are going to pull out of all internationals to give the players a rest. Smith shouldn't be a hypocrite, if he beLieves in the importance of int RL then the kangaroos should have a full fixture program planned out for the next 5 years.

Formula 1, EPL, NFL, AFL, FIFA all seem to be doing ok with central office calling all the shots and telling clubs how it will be.

Thats not what i meant, i absolutely agree that clubs shouldnt be able to challenge the power of Head Office...

Im saying that a single "Dictator" running Head Office is a bad idea. The bureaucratic structure is far more important than the skills of a given worker. No employee is staying forever, so the business cannot be structure around them having absolute control.

Bec (good ol' Burbs) saying that the NRL needs a "benevolent dictator" (abviously thinking of Vlad and the AFL) totally missed the part where all the successful corporate leaders WEREN'T actually all powerful.

Im saying that her suggested corporate structure is idiotic and can only be considered a good idea by someone who is hammered......

Well it is DUI bec we are talking about! I do,think that a really strong CEO with a very clear vision and the ability to operationalise the strategic plan is critical, you only have to look at gallop to see what can happen with a weak CEO.
