NRL coaches who never played for an NRL club.

Who would be considered the best League coach in the country who has never coached at an NRL club - I mean isn't in the system at all?
The Walker brothers?

I think it was Peter Mulholland went from being a high school coach (St Gregorys) to being an assistant NRL coach then Perth reds head coach. Would like to see more of that. Promoting coaches who haven't been in the NRL system. Get some fresh ideas in.

13 games over 7 or 8 seasons, there’s not much to remember.

Any Tigers fans remember the 3 games Trent Robinson played for them? Interstingly, according to Wikipedia, he was the first player to make their 1st grade debut for the joint venture.

Radio Shock Jock Alan Jones, never played Rugby League and tried to coach the Balmain Tigers. 1991 -1993.

Jones coached Balmain from 1991 to 1993 with these results: 1991 – 8 wins, 12th place; 1992 – 10 wins, 10th place; 1993 – 5 wins, 12th place. At the end of the 1993 season he reapplied for the coaching role, offering a new business plan to the board, but when it was rejected he resigned.

The tigers players used to take ice baths after playing. No one had any idea that it was actually beneficial from a sports science perspective. Alan just liked to suck back a few cold ones after a game.

It just shows that being a great player doesn't automatically qualify you to be an NRL coach. The same goes for commentating.
