Not too sure what to think about this a-league expansion process. Gallop was about to start the same thing in the Nrl before he got punted. After he left they realized nothing had been done in regards to research/ analysis/ development/ costs etc. the $32million is a big number but as we know that wont make the club successful..... ask the $50mil suns and gws.

I haven’t read anything yet other than the $32mil (& potential stadium) going to a-league. Surely the clubs have state and federal gov funding, grassroots funding and development, facilities funding all agreed upon? If not it would put these clubs in a bad negotiation position for when they want all these things.

I wish the Nrl would expand now but I also can realize that throwing money at a expansion club isn’t the answer. There are examples of that everywhere.

In my opinion if done right the Nrl could have fed/state funding, grassroots development and school access, revenue generating facility, facilities grants all before a expansion team starts their bid. A new team could come with a $20mil+ price tag plus the extras that we know will help cement the clubs future into the new area. Not only that they will have the luxury of giving the 9th game to the highest bidder without their fingers tied around 2 binding expansion contracts.

Hopefully having 2 new expansion teams in Perth and brisbane2(Ipswich) bring in a $40mil package each ($20mil license and $20mil funding) plus a $60-$70mil 9th game broadcast deal. That’s what we should be aiming for.

Another club in Brisbane challenging the monopoly of the Broncos is a better option. The Broncos have owned Brisbane with only half city support for far too long. A genuine local Brisbane derby is necessary.

And the half that don't support broncos already support other clubs. Will they all suddenly stop supporting those teams to take up brisbane 2. I doubt it. I don't think it's as clear cut as some think. Sure they might be a lot of people's second team but is thst enough for success. I want a second bris team but it really has to be the right model which i don't think anyone really knows or agrees on yet.

Glad you agree with a 2nd Brisbane team! From the experience in Newcastle, most Novocastrians either follow the Knights and have a Sydney club team they like. Or follow the Sydney club and have Knights as their 2nd team like I do.

lol, would have more journalistic credibility if they knew it was already a 16 team comp!

Wellington a contender for team as NRL eyes expansion to 16-team competition

Greenberg said any possible expansion would not happen before the expiry of the current broadcast deal which runs until 2022.

"To be fair and honest it's going to take that long to even consider a future footprint - where you would invest and how you would do it?"

A second Brisbane side and Perth are widely considered the front-runners to receive franchises should the NRL expand while Queensland's western corridor, central Queensland and Wellington have also been touted as options.

Wellington will host the NRL game between the Warriors and Sharks on July 19 next year and the NRL will no doubt be keeping a close eye on how big an attendance the game gets.

Another option is for sides to be relocated should they fall into financial hardship with the NRL stating they would not be bailing out any clubs which come begging with cap in hand.

The NRL has had to come to the rescue of the Wests Tigers, Gold Coast and St George Illawarra in recent years.

I think Greenberg needs to live in a State without a club to see what a difference it makes before coming out with nonsense like this!

Greenberg believes to have a national competition, it doesn’t mean that every state needs to have a team.

“To have a truly nation game doesnt mean you have to have a competition that comes across clubs in every state,” Greenberg said.

“You can have a footprint without having teams in every state.

“That’s why the importance of us seeding games in Melbourne with our flagship events like Origin, Perth, Adelaide, it is why we are looking to expand in some of those spaces.”

What we know so far:

Beattie stated that expansion teams will most likely come from the second teir
NRL Commissioning a review to be completed 2019
NRL stating that expansion won't be before the current broadcast deal expires in 2022
WA Pirates moving up the ranks in NSW and are aiming to play NSW Cup by 2022
Multiple QLD and even Brisbane options obviously already exist in the QLD Cup

It will be Perth & Brisbane for sure

I’m no expert on Queensland geography but couldn’t the south Queensland crushers make a comeback based in either the city of Brisbane or the surrounding areas like Ipswich or Logan??

I’ve read articles stating that both Logan and Ipswich have populations above 300,000 and are expected to reach nearly 500,000 by 2030. One or even both could sustain a NRL club you’d believe.

The crushers would be better then the bombers bid, which was getting around. What brissy needs is a south vs north rivalry. Broncos being north of the river. If the government ever ended building that stadium in Springfield. It would be the perfect base for a south/west side.

You dont need another stadium, you just need some key differentiation for the new club. Be it socio-economic appeal, different geographical/population group appeal or appeal to a sub set of the main stream population of the region.

If you take AFL expansion in Perth as a perfect example of what could happen in Brisbane then the Dockers have worked so well in challenging the biggest sports club in the country by offering something different to the Eagles. They appeal to a more working class mentality and have a geographic difference attracting supporters from the Freo region and Southern suburbs of Perth where as Eagles are now seen as more the middle classes club from the more affluent Northern and Western suburbs.

I thought there where talks of a rectangular stadium as well. The Brisbane roar would move games there. It might have been something else. Either way it would be an ideal location, between Ipswich and south brissy.

I do like the idea of either Ipswich jets or Redcliffe dolphins getting the nod(or both). But neither side will get a lot of support outside their demographic.

I'd suggest that the fans of the code that dislike the Broncos may get on board?

Obviously apart from Jets and Dolphins fans, any RL fans in Brisbane that aren't Broncos fans also aren't Jets or Dolphins fans, and most will refuse to support them just as they do the Broncos.

If you want a new club to have broad appeal in a market with lots of history like Brisbane then it has to either have a new brand or it has be a long dead brand that can be resurrected, otherwise you'll carry all the baggage of the old brand along with you when you set up the new club and the NRL can't afford that at the moment.

Mmmmm? I'm thinking about a club based and playing out of Brisbane sharing Lang Park. It's doable. Just got to work out the boundaries and name etc.
I do agree. But what’s the best option?
1. Put a club/s with history like Ipswich Jets or Redcliffe Dolphins.
2. Create some new brand that targets a bigger area.
