Regardless of what this dickless moron Reggie thinks, the NRL has teams in teams in NSW, Qld, Victoria and New Zealand... the AFL have only got maybe 2 more provinces, and they only have populations of 20 people

WA and SA have population of 20 people hey?

Perhaps that is why the Adelaide Rams and Western Reds failed so misreably. How could they have ever hoped to compete with the AFL in such a tiny marketplace. Oh well, I guess we can now rule out once and for all WA and SA as potential expansion markets for rugby league.

Reggie, if league was in Perth and SA, we would be putting the AFL out the back door and back to the VFL!!

AFL are big in smaller states- which the NRL WILL EVENTUALLY EXPAND TO, BUT NRL IS STRONG WHERE IT COUNTS - NSW AND QLD!!! : :D :D

Only 1 AFL club has been forced to merge.

Not real good with your facts are you there... besides the fact that a 'merger' by definition requires 2 clubs or more to merge into one entity, meaning that 2 AFL clubs have merged.

And have you ever heard of University, the VFL club that was once in the competition and is no longer?? Stop spinning shit and get your facts right

Do you have a source for that crap about the NRL TV rights?

Channel 9 was and will continue to be the only commercial FTA TV network interested in a non-national rugby league competition. With that in mind I don't see how there will be an increase in dollars for the NRL.

The NRL rights for fox equals $462 million.(Likely to be increased as it has been Austalias most watched Pay Tv sport ahead of cricket!)
Channel 9 FTA rights equal $105 million.(Likely to go up due to consistently high-RECORD ratings!)
Radio 2Gb equals 9 million over 3 years.

TOTAL BROADCASTING REVENUE = $576 MILLION

rEGGIE MY BOY, THESE ARE FACTS EVEN YOU CANNOT DENY THAT SHOWS VFL IS LIVING ON THE SMALLER STATES WITH MINUTE MARKETS AND MONEY FOR MAJOR BROADCASTING!!! :D :D :D :D 8)

Yes the AFL were running scared of the Adealide Rams and Western Reds. Why did the Rams shift their home games to the smaller Hindmarsh soccer stadium? Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that support at the Adelaide Oval had dwindled to the point of embarrassment would it?

You can have SA and WA IF WE CONTINUE DOMINATING IN NSW AND QLD AND NEW ZEALAND- GRowing regions like NEWCASTLE, CENTRAL COAST AND THE GOLD COAST ARE ALL AMONG THE FASTEST GROWING REGIONS IN AUSTRALIA- AND YOU GUESSED IT rEGGIE- THEY ALL LOVE LEAGUE TO DEATH!!! :D :D :D :D 8) 8) 8)

Reggie you are officially knocked out and cannot go on- proceed back to VFL and good luck in your Gaelic test!

So University is still in the VFL/AFL?

University disbanded off their own accord. There was a University club in the NSWRFL that also disbanded, but I've counted neither as it was their choice to stop playing.

And what about the effect the advent of the AFL had on the SANFL and the WAFL? At least two teams in the SANFL have effectively been forced to merge.

Clutching at straws.

In the SANFL Woodville merged with West Torrens. This was unrelated to the AFL side being admitted, they had financial woes before the Crows came in.

In the WAFL no club has merged.

Why did South Melbourne Swans relocate to Sydney? Wasn't it to get their hands on money from the VFL to avoid going under?

Partly but they had more capital funds than North Melbourne. They could and would have survived if they relocated their games from the Lakeside Oval.

It was more to develop the code in the Northern States.

Were it not for the favored treatment that Sydney and Brisbane get courtesy of salary cap concessions and a better negotiated TV rights contract than the NRL have then both of those teams would be struggling immensely.

Before the salary cap concessions came in, Sydney were averaging better crowds than the NRL/NSWRFL.

I mentioned University coz is was claimed no AFL/VFL sides have merged, shut down/etc.

At the time of the merger between Woodville and West Torrens the entire SANFL competition was averaging crowds of about 13 to 14 thousand per week (5 matches/10 teams), at that time comparable to one game of AFL/VFL. Also, the SANFL at that time was affected by the AFL/VFL as there was nearly as much interest in SA for the AFL/VFL as there was for their own competition. Prior to Woodville and West Torrens merging the AFL/VFL was going behind the SANFL's back by negotiating with Port Adelaide to try and get them into the competition.

As for Sydney Swans averaging more than NRL/NSWRL prior to getting salary cap concessions, I'm sure there is an element of the Sydney public that are prepared to pay to see a bunch of guys parading around in tight shorts, as evidenced by the popularity of the Mardi Gras.

Without expansion, rugby league will never be able to challenge the AFL as the dominant football code in Australia.

Oh so this is one of those boring us vs them threads.

Reggie if you had faith in your sport you wouldn't be here end of story

The AFL is making more progress in terms of development in NSW and QLD than the NRL is making in VIC. As for SA, WA, TAS and NT for the NRL.

Overall my boy Reggie, VFL is not cared about in NSW and QLD, especially in NSW where the Swans are liked but they are not talked about by too many people accross the board!
You ask any young boy of who they follow and the Swans would get a response of 1 in 100- if lucky!!
This is the main point of development-the kids are choosing to play league more than ever before and participation rates in NSW of league as compard to VFL is a no-contest!

Swans are lacated here in Sydney and are fairly followed by a very small number of people and an even smaller number of juniors choose VFL as an option!

Reggie, NRL would rather have NSW and QLD secured forever before worrying about smaller states like SA- ESPECAILLY WHEN FAST GROWING REGIONS LIKE THE GOLD COAST AND CENTRAL COAST AND WELLINGTON IN NZ ARE CHAMPING AT THE BIT TO GET A CRACK AT NRL!

And my boy Reggie, these are the facts, not fiction!!

Lets be fair now, if having these minor states makes the victorians feel better, then so be it. Lets just keep focussing on what matters.

Comparable to one game of AFL/VFL? No. At the very least, VFL/AFL has averaged crowds of minimum 20 K (it's 34 K now).

Of course AFL affected SANFL crowds. The game evolved from a state based competition to a national competition unlike RL who is still stuck in at heart, a NSW/QLD based sport.

Your first statement said the AFL forced the merger of SANFL clubs. It didn't as I've previously said because of their finances prior to advent of the Crows.

Actually, Port Adelaide went behind the SANFL's back and tried to gain admission into the AFL, not the other way behind.

Mate , NRL is bigger in Australia and New Zealand and Great Britain than VFL could ever ever ever ever hope for -we let you have Tasmania, SA and WA - WHILE WE GROW AND CONTINUE TO DOMINATE IN NSW AND QLD-OUR BIGGEST AND BEST SPORTING MARKETS!!!

VFL AND UNION FOR THAT MATTER ARE BEHIND NRL IN POPULARITY AND TV STRENGTH!!!

If yuo want proof then wait and see what increase the NRL get from fox and channel 9 while Union get a substantial decrease as well as the VFL.

More to the point though is that Union is just another code of Rugby and if there was no union dividing the code we'd have a shit load more support than the AFL could ever hope for!

Really who cares about the southern states. I wouldn't have a clue if the storm will ever make it work in melbourne, I do have my doubts. Adelaide is not really worth worrying about they practically have no population growth and I don't think there is any real genuine interest in league there. There is still interest In Perth which is a shame they don't have a team but the reason I think the Union team will probably end up there which won't be good for league. All that doesn't really matter The Gold Coast needs it's team back It was successful in making money and if you look at the players who went on to great things like Ikin, Sattler, Campbell and there were quite a few others success wasn't going to be too far away. I don't know why we are worried about the other states we need to just have League strong where it belongs where it does have family traditions and In that way it's never going to die no matter what comes along and is flavour of the month, soccer, afl, or international rules.. (I've heard this is going to be the biggest sport in the world soon ) Anyway who cares about expanding with the population growth of NSW and QLD we need to be worried about having all our areas covered so everyone can be within driving distance for a game every weekend before we are worried about trying to play a game where interest has to be created.
