nsw has 5 million people

im sure theres enough victorian expats

for there to be some vfl juniors and/or supporters

VIC is second to NSW population wise and rugby league has a little more than 8,000 NSW/QLD expats that support rugby league.

Most Victorians can't even tell the difference between Union and League. Not a good sign for the development of rugby league in VIC. BTW how is the junior development going in VIC?

RL is very foreign in Victoria. But it is growing, it started really as the "other" code, but honestly League has more appeal than AFL in general. League will take time in Melbourne but it WILL eventually make an impact if League is patient and they fight for better TV times.

storm to gold coast and include central coast - who cares about the other states - 3/5's of the population live in nsw and qld. league will be dominant in 3/5's of the sports market - surely common sense will prevail and the nrl will realise the experiment has failed.

The greater good for the greater number - relocate the storm and include the central coast bears

Piss off GS. Melbourne Storm, West Tigers out of Perth, Cronulla to Adelaide as the South Australian Sharks, GC Dolphins.

16 teams, 22 rounds, NATIONAL Rugby League. Then all I have to do is find room for the CC Bears and the Southern Orcas.

I am laughing at the posts of Reggie(the australian fumbleball follower) .The Tv ratings for Fox for rugby league in the 2 states with a combined population of half the oz population,is far greater than any other code ,daylight second. The ch 9Tv audience for the rugby league GF in Melbourne (the home of fumbleball) was greater ,than the TV audience in Sydney (with a greater population) for the AFL .
Ch7 has expressed a real interest in bidding for the next FTA rugby league contract and even ch10 the official AFL station stated it would consider rugby league in its lineup. ,and the current contract with ch9 was a gift at about $15 million per year. This means that both the FTA and pay TV contracts will be greater than the current ones. Additionally the NRL has stated that other outlets are interested in the pay TV contract for league apart from Fox.
the Tv stations in Adelaide and Perth did not have a live rugby league G/F if they had the ratings would have left the AFL behind.
The Gold Coast and Central coast are among the highest population growths in Australia. If you think think the NRL(after the Gold Coast and central coast) down the track is not going to revisit and establish teams in Perth and Adelaide, then you have been reading and watching too many AFL scripted newspapers.
The AFL dominance in Melbourne is being assaulted on all sides by rugby league which is increasing the number of local teams, and getting into more schools,a resurgent soccer in their new format ,the possibility of rugby union with a s14 team in Melbourne. No wonder Reggie and the AFL are starting to get concerned.
Fang kyou ;-)

Comparable to one game of AFL/VFL? No. At the very least, VFL/AFL has averaged crowds of minimum 20 K (it's 34 K now).

In 1991, overall crowd average for a VFL/AFL crowd was 23,096. Sydney Swans, Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Lions all averaged less than 14k.

Johnny Wilkinson said:
Of course AFL affected SANFL crowds. The game evolved from a state based competition to a national competition unlike RL who is still stuck in at heart, a NSW/QLD based sport.

RL a NSW/QLD based sport? Hmm, what do England, Papua New Guinea, France, New Zealand, etc play then? AFL?

Johnny Wilkinson said:
Your first statement said the AFL forced the merger of SANFL clubs. It didn't as I've previously said because of their finances prior to advent of the Crows.

Actually, Port Adelaide went behind the SANFL's back and tried to gain admission into the AFL, not the other way behind.

I said the AFL "forced" the merger? Where did I say that?

Where to for NRL expansion?

This thread proves the rugby league community, in thinking of nrl expansion - is limited to NSW. I pity the the so-called NRL.

NRL - A wannabe national competition in Australia.

Where does this thread prove NRL expansion is limited to NSW ?
Mate you make Eddie Macguire and the southern press believable at times.
When and if AFL becomes the dominate code in NSW and Qld in player numbers,TV ratings, crowds, has a team in NZ ,plays truly international matches without completely changing the game to make it an artificial joke, then get back to us and claim bragging rights.
No wonder you have the extra goalposts, inaccuracy seems to be ingrained in the AFL psyche.
Fangs for the memories. ;-)

Oh this topic again.

What's the opposite of expansion?

Contraction!

This is the only thing that'll happen in the NRL.

Forget expansion, work out which sides will go, which sides will merge, because that's all the NRL are interested in.

No it wont. The ARL voted for expansion, voted for the Gold Coast. Only News needs to be swung. And next year when they look at the hopefully increased TV contract and pokie tax aftermath. Chances are they will be given the green light.

Diehard, is that true?

A major sponsor of the Dolphins was/is the Gold Coast Bulliten and they are owned by news. I can't see the sense in that :?

The Daily Telegraph bagged the living sh*t out of Super League for a Few Months. It was reined in though.

The Only papers News Keeps it thumb over are the Hun, The Tele and The Australian. The Rest have their agenda set by their editors.

What t-ba the hutt is correct. In Brisbane the Courier Mail was INCREDIBLY negative of the Dolphins idea. Mainly because they are mainly concerned with the Broncos. The GC Bulletin was on the side of the Dolphins, fully supportive, esspecially because they would help sell papers.

If the Dolphins had gotten in, Im sure the bad blood between newspapers and the teams would have helped stoke the fires of a bloody rivalry.
