JOHN Grant will face the fire of the NRL club chairmen just hours after returning from the UK on Wednesday.
The Australian Rugby League Commission chairman will fly to Sydney on Wednesday morning after attending the Four Nations final on Monday morning, before meeting with fellow commissioners ahead of what is expected to be a fiery meeting of club chair’s later in the day.
“I’ll be fresh as a daisy,” Grant said. “They are always interesting (meetings). I don’t have a view on what will happen.”
Clubs have grown increasingly frustrated by delays in finalising negotiations on club funding and player payments stemming from the $1.8 billion broadcast deal. Grant expected those topics to dominate the meeting.
“The agenda is centred around the progress we’re making around the perpetual licence agreement and funding,” Grant said.
“That’s where the major discussion will be. On the agenda at the club’s request is a discussion around the governance of the game and the commission.”
It is expected the NRL will respond to the wish list clubs sent more than five months ago. Some clubs are hesitate to agree to the NRL’s sinking fund proposal — designed to prop up struggling clubs.
“We’ve been meeting with the subcommittee of chairs, contemplating draft licensing agreements,” Grant said. “We’ve been talking about the key items on that agenda, about nine of those. The subcommittee is well aware of the progress.
“We will communicate what our position is. At the end of that the club’s will form a view. We’ll be putting our views very clearly to the clubs.
“Hopefully we’ll come out of that with some resolution.”
Grant has been in England, attending Four Nations matches. Grant said he has been “pushing the banner” for international rugby league as Australia prepares to host next year’s World Cup.
“It’s vital,” Grant said of the tournament. “We’ve taken, a very specific focus around revenue generation and where games are going to be played. It’s vital from a revenue point of view.
“We’ve got to hit all our targets. There are some big targets around revenue, social media, attendance and broadcast.
“If we hit them we’ll jump world rugby league to another level and build into the 2021 World Cup.”
