In terms of revenue gap last financial year the central bodies revenue was
NRL revenue $334mill
AFL revenue $492mill
A difference of $158mill

On the plus side many afl clubs are struggling as much as many NRL clubs to make ends meet.

Explain to me how the NRL is "povvo" compared to ANY Australian sport you northern monkey.

You seem to be mistaking g me for the other poster, never said NRL revenue was shite, just that it is significantly les than afl which I think was his point and is correct.

"Northern monkey"? Lol

.

The NRL revenue will be over $500 million in 2018...not a bad jump..

You will still whinge though because it's behind AFL..

On the plus side, at least you don't proclaim the NRL is dying like a lot of the other Chicken Littles...

You were clearly defending his position, which claimed it was significantly less.

Why won't you admit that it's hyperbole? Or is it some sort of twisted northern pride thing??

NB .One particular expansion AFL club(Lions) is losing money hand over foot in the tens of millions.Added to the fact the AFL owns the Suns and is pouring millions into GWS.Resulting in a combined loss for AFL clubs of over $93m.These AFL clubs with their huge membership numbers and crowds still lose the loot.Plus the additional TV monies.

Rushed expansion putting pins on maps,is not necessarily the panacea for a code's ills.

League is a niche sport in this country and irrelevant internationally. The NRL should be maximising its presence in its heartland. At the moment it is alienating many long standing League fans.

Niche sport?

What are the mainstream ones?

Let me guess ... Only one comes to mind...one that is even less irrelevant internationally..

I'd say $158mill in a year is significantly less wouldnt you?

It's a great increase and the NRL revenue has massively increased since 2012 which is all positive. Doesn't change the fact we will still be massively behind afl in 2018. And yes they are spending heaps on expansion, because they have the money and desire to do so!

Now that is nonsense. It is the biggest sport in part of the country and gaining footholds elsewhere.

Internationally we are about to see 35k plus turn out in England for two sides with nothing to do with the locals in a game many see as a forgone conclusion, hardly irrelevant!

They are behind AFL... Meh..

The NBA is behind the NFL... Don't think they are too sad about it though..

I still think the NRL is in a good position with an extra game and expansion still up their sleeve...

I stand by my original statement - the real proof is the shit money that most League players get for bashing each other senseless for our entertainment each week.

It is doing that with the lower tier state comps.

" A niche sport in this country" ,written in true fumble ball fashion. Millions watch SOO and Grand finals. WTF.
I humbly suggest you send the AFL some money to underpin the Lions losses or assist AFL clubs in their combined $93m loss.
AFL is an Island sport girt by sea.

" Irrelevant internationally" LOL.So the UK Govt spends 21m pounds to lobby to get the RLWC in 2021.
More than 1 million watch rl on the BBC .

Long standing rl fans still support the code with record memberships indicates otherwise.

You can pick flag-waver from 100 paces ,just by sniffing the air.

Then our man goes on about " sh*t money" . An 18 year old is getting $700K pa over 5 years. No sh*t.

Million dollar contracts are happening around the NRL already.
Seriously I can't take you seriously.

BTW in the last 18 months according to the Australian Adelaide's Sam Shaw has joined a growing list of young AFL players to retire over concussion, plus Justin Clarke,Sam Please and Leigh Adams.Getting belted for fumbling along the ground for "sh*t money"?

So it's hard to get an accurate picture on how the pay Compares for both leagues. There's sponsorship and tpa's, some afl clubs get extra concessions while others struggle to pay their full cap, and nrl players get rep payments etc
If you take the simplest route, salary cap divided by team list size, it makes for interesting reading.
The afl cap is 10,600,000 for a 38 man squad
Nrl is 7,000,000 for a 25 man squad for 2017

So the average wages are
Afl- $278,947
Nrl- $280,000

That could just mean that most AFL players are underpaid as well.

35K for an international. Whoop-de-doo! And they bury the telecast to the #1 League nation in the early morning of a work day.
