NRL investigating international broadcast deals as competition continues

With everything that’s happening in global sport, and the absolute lack of content that is going to be available, this could actually be a catalyst for a huge jump in the international standing of rugby league.

Not saying they can pull this off, but if they can it would be huge. In their favor is the fact that League is a game that’s custom made for tv.

There is undoubtedly a great opportunity, keeping the comp going to fulfill it is the big problem! If they can do that then all games into UK plus targeting Canada and USA would be a great strategy for increased exposure. Might help the club and game sponsors be happy as well being shown into new markets.

The NRL should allow ESPN to show the games for free. With zero content for the foreseeable future they may jump at the chance.
It would be interesting to see what the reaction and viewing figures would be to see if there is any potential to spread the game to North America.
On Kayo TV, they show union, hurling, rock-skipping, hot dog eating,etc...which has my attention for around 1.5 seconds.

I fret the US viewers will probably watch one of our games for a few minutes, then realise they have to finish one of a dozen things to binge watch on Netflix.

It would be interesting to see the viewing stats if they do pull this off.

To be fair it is exactly what is needed right now. Its opening up discussions to potential negotiations. It isnt necessarily about selling stuff.

Testing the waters and creating contacts with discussions that might benefit both parties.

I dont like the way Vlandy handled the press conference the other day (especially once I saw the more professional AFL press conference) however.......this initiative could be a first step in saving the day or even advancing us past the reaches of our sporting opposition in this country.
I thought I suffered a stroke when he called our sport "Ruby League".

Yep. If they pulled it off it would be genius.

Unfortunately, that’s a massive “if”. It would take self sacrifice by players and officials, and some logistical magic from intelligent sports administrators.

I’m going to miss the NRL in the next few months.

I thought exactly the same lol.
Maybe this is the time NRL shines and out does all other sports, or maybe not.

Virtual crowds is an interesting idea. I'm sure with CGI being as it these days t woudnt be to hard. Go on NRL give it a go for a laugh. If it works you could stop worrying about crowds all together, save money on stadiums and play NRL 7 nights a week!

Why stop there? Virtual teams is the way to go. The coronavirus won't stop them.

Then players can play any time, as many matches as you want, on demand!

There is an article in the SMH about how the ARLCs approach to ESPN hasnt done much in the short term but has them interested in grabbing the rights in 2023

Its an exciting idea, but....

My big hope in this is that ESPN gets a taste of NRL through this association and decides to go all on during the next bidding process...

With Disney+ opening in Aus, a flagship sport like NRL is how to get a lot of people subscribed quick.

It worked for Austar/Foxsports, it can work again...

Its so f*cking light on quotes, i reckon the journo just came on here and found my post....

You joke, but a Rugby League esports competition isn't as crazy as it sounds.

If you did it right it'd probably be reasonably popular.
